As family-friendly and back to basics activities go, building sandcastles on the beach is at the top of many lists. And what could be better than the beach being a gorgeous mile-long stretch of golden Cornish sand, in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and less than five minutes' walk from a family-friendly rural campsite overlooking it all? A few minutes' walk above the beach at Praa Sands, between Penzance and Helston on Cornwall’s south coast, is Higher Pentreath Farm Camp Site, which prides itself as a park offering camping – and memory making – as it used to be. It’s a spacious park that’s been family-run since the 1950s and the committed team prides itself on keeping guests relaxed – probably not too difficult on a park overlooking Praa Sands… Higher Pentreath has space aplenty for kids to run around, and a shop on site for basics (and ice cream). Facilities include a toilet and shower block with free hairdryer, washing machine (small charge applies), covered washing up area, phone and laptop charging at reception, and ice pack freezing or supplying. A garage is half a mile away and a 24-hour supermarket within 10 minutes’ drive; there's also a pub, the Sandbar, right on Praa Sands, serving home-cooked Mediterranean-style meals and Sunday carvery alongside food theme and regular music nights.

Liked Freedom to choose our pitch. Scenic place and great base for visiting other places. Good Wi-Fi signal. Hot water in the showers. Large freezer for ice packs. Arrived early and owner so very accommodating letting us pitch. Clean, plentiful toilets and showers.

Disliked Very sloping pitches. Steps to the utility block bit of a hazard. Lack of privacy in the showers - windows to the outside (especially at night, right where you stand to shower)

Liked Great views, easy to check in and then left to our own for the rest of the stay. Field is quite steep but there are plenty of flat pitches. Facilities clean and sufficient for the size of the site.

Local attractions

This is such a lovely part of Cornwall, on the south coast with the pristine beaches of Land’s End and the Lizard Peninsula, but also close to the big family attractions: the theme park Flambards and the National Seal Sanctuary are both within 10 to 15 minutes’ drive. Praa Sands West is the closest of the two Praa Sands beaches to Higher Pentreath – within a third of a mile – but the other, Praa Sands East, is still well under a mile’s walk away and very doable even if you’re carrying your surfboard. Nearby Prussia Cove and Kenneggy Sands are quieter coves, Kennack Sands has a nature reserve to its east, and a must is Marazion, sheltered by the National Trust-managed island of St Michael's Mount 10 minutes’ drive from Higher Pentreath and looking over stupendously good-looking Mounts Bay. Take a boat from here to the island or go around the harbour and village on a guided tour (held on Tuesdays and Fridays). Once off the beach, the towns and villages of Cornwall are close to hand: the nearest to Higher Pentreath Farm Camp Site is the ancient market town of Penzance (about 15 minutes' drive), home of the Penzance pirates in Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera (try and sing their shanties after a scrumpy).
