Experience a classic slice of Cornwall on your next holiday by staying at Get Lost-With-In Camping, a no-frills site about one mile from the small historic town of Lostwithiel (five minutes’ drive, or a 20-minute walk along the wide, shaded pavement skirting the A390). Lostwithiel plays host to several traditional events, among them a lively week-long summer Carnival that sees the town transformed into a playground for pram and duck races, rounders and cricket, plus street parties and parades. Lostwithiel also has several shops, pubs and restaurants, so if you don’t fancy firing up the barbecue at the site (where barbecues are allowed, but not provided), you can always find a nice hot meal at a local establishment. A grassy field with a hardstanding path through the middle is your home for your Cornish break (note that you may need chocks, since not all pitches are fully level). While this is wild camping, there are a few little extras to sweeten the deal, including two portable toilets and a gas shower. Drinkable water is also available at the site, which sits right on the edge of a golf course and has a trout stream running at the bottom end. If you’re not all about hitting the links or angling, there’s epic hiking to be had along the South West Coast Path, which you can access at Par Beach (15 minutes), plus watersports at west-facing Polkerris Beach (15 minutes; check out the sunsets here, too) and swimming at sheltered Readymoney Beach (20 minutes).

Local attractions

The vast Rainforest and Mediterranean biomes of the Eden Project (10 minutes’ drive) are surrounded by lush gardens and zig-zagging trails climbing up vegetation-covered hills. In addition to an outdoor playground and ziplining, the site also has a stage for the Eden Sessions live music concerts. An 18th-century former prison in Bodmin (15 minutes) houses the immersive Bodmin Jail Attraction, with exhibits on the building’s former life as a detention centre, including the Victorian Hanging Pit. Ghost Walks and After Dark tours turn the spookiness up a notch or three. Fowey (20 minutes) is a pretty port town with winding streets lined with cafés and restaurants. At the southernmost edge of town are the ruins of St Catherine’s Castle, while across the River Fowey is Polruan Castle’s stone blockhouse – both were built by Henry VIII in the mid-1500s. From Fowey, a ferry service sails across St Austell Bay to Mevagissey.
