The vast Rainforest and Mediterranean biomes of the Eden Project (10 minutes’ drive) are surrounded by lush gardens and zig-zagging trails climbing up vegetation-covered hills. In addition to an outdoor playground and ziplining, the site also has a stage for the Eden Sessions live music concerts. An 18th-century former prison in Bodmin (15 minutes) houses the immersive Bodmin Jail Attraction, with exhibits on the building’s former life as a detention centre, including the Victorian Hanging Pit. Ghost Walks and After Dark tours turn the spookiness up a notch or three. Fowey (20 minutes) is a pretty port town with winding streets lined with cafés and restaurants. At the southernmost edge of town are the ruins of St Catherine’s Castle, while across the River Fowey is Polruan Castle’s stone blockhouse – both were built by Henry VIII in the mid-1500s. From Fowey, a ferry service sails across St Austell Bay to Mevagissey.
