  • Rural Cornish farm with on-site fishing
  • A 20-minute drive from Bude
  • Farm shop on site, plus bar/restaurant with takeaway options
Cornwall, fishing, fab views, lip-smacking farm produce and pasties made to order… 'tis no wonder that guests wax lyrical about Chelsfield Farm, about 20 minutes from the beaches and watery activities of splendid Bude. Set on a smallholding within 17 acres deep in rural Cornwall, this family farm comes with spectacular views towards Dartmoor, immaculate amenities, and a handsomely set fishing lake at which to land carp and tench for a small fee. (Not a fishing fan? Bring a book and a picnic to the lakeside instead.) Resident horses Dolly and Connie are part of the farm menagerie, along with a flock of sheep, free-range chickens, turkeys, geese and guinea fowl, all on a wide open green space with large, level and well-drained pitches and plenty of room for kids to play (send them to find the tree swing and you'll likely not see them for hours). Amenities are well looked after and include a toilet and shower block with free electric showers, a washing-up sink, several water taps and a chemical waste point. Owners Marianne and Alan strongly encourage barbecues here, so it's just as well that Chelsfield also comes with a smashing farm shop, stocked with first-rate produce including locally farmed meat, fresh free-range eggs and other bits and pieces to sizzle up on the site barbie while looking across to Dartmoor. A bar is to hand for drinks afterwards. If you'd rather not cook, the farm's restaurant/takeaway serves breakfast baps, burgers and hot dogs, as well as sandwiches, pies and pasties all made to highly tasty order.

Willow 3 bedroom cottage / chalet / bungalow

Liked Lovely setting, very peaceful and fantastic views. The chalet was excellent, very cosy and nicely furnished and the beds and sofa were comfy. Kitchen well stocked with utensils/pots and pans etc.

There is a a big picnic bench outside perfect for eating outside.

Disliked There weren’t any recycling bins at the campsite, but I suppose that’s a council issue.

Liked The site was really nice! Chelsfield farm has a real community vibe, the hosts were amiable and helpful - even with some fishing supplies.

Toilet and shower block was easy to reach from all pitches, well maintained and the washing facilities for clothes and dishes was to the same standard, located next to the shower block.

The simple inn (onsite bar and restaurant) was great! We ate in there twice and the food was incredible - home cooked pub grub and the Sunday Roast was the best I’ve had in a restaurant. Lively vibe in the bar side of the venue with a pool table and farm shop that had fresh and frozen meat stocked up daily. We had some steaks, bacon and leek and pork sausages from them and all were delicious.

The pitch we were on was relaxed; lots of children dotted around playing and on Saturday night it was a bit lively on pitch - we enjoyed listening to the fun!

There is a spar 4 mins up the road, and it’s 15-20 minute drive into town if you need any supplies.

We went to widemouth bay which was a 20 min drive and is a really beautiful beach, then went into Bude for some traditional pasties.

I like to try different places but would absolutely return to Chelsfield farm - it was a tranquil, restorative and relaxing stay!

Thank you to the hosts Alan and his wife and the friendly staff on site ☺️

Disliked Not catching any fish, but that’s out of everyone’s hands!

Liked We had a fantastic stay, we even stayed an extra night!
Ponds were fabulous for a bit of late afternoon fishing.
Ablution facilities were always clean.
The restaurant on site was well priced, you received very good portions of locally reared, grown and sourced produce.

Hosts and staff we always friendly and ready to help.

Nice friendly vibe in their pub, we watched the rugby, played pool and even were lucky enough to join in a great evening of poker with the locals which was absolutely fantastic!

Local fresh produce, meat, fish, veg, cheese, eggs etc for sale.
Locally caught fish on a Friday morning was superb on our BBQ.

Definitely give Alan and his wife 10 stars for a great week away.
We will most definitely be back!

Liked The location was great- remote but near enough to access places. Friendly, accommodating staff. EHU easily accessible and plenty of space to pitch.
Small farm shop on site for essentials.

Disliked Camp was noisy at nighttime, especially weekends but quiet by 10:30pm.
The showers were either freezing cold or scalding hot with no way of adjusting.

Powered gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Openness around the site and at the time of our stay there was a good amount of room between pitches. The site itself is surrounded by lovely Devon countryside with open views.

Disliked The toilets and showers were adequate but compared to others could have been warmer, cleaner and less agricultural.

Local attractions

North Cornwall, north Devon and Dartmoor are all easily reachable from Chelsfield Farm, for days around coast and countryside, wildlife watching and walking, cantering around on horseback and fishing via shore and river. Tintagel Castle, the Crealy Great Adventure Park and other top Cornish family spots are within a short drive. Most folk know nearby Bude for its surf, but you'll find a fair bit to do around town and out of the water too, from cantering on its coastline to potters around its old harbour or letting the kids loose at the town's six-storey indoor play centre. The spectacular South West Coast Path runs from Bude to Crackington Haven and from there onto Boscastle and Tintagel, or you could hike in the other direction 15 miles to Hartford Quay via the Hartford Peninsula and then – if you dare – another 10 miles onto the tiny cobbled town of north Devon's Clovelly. Other activities all around include sea fishing, clay pigeon shooting, birdwatching, and spotting local wildlife like red deer, roe deer, foxes, badgers, frogs, newts, toads, squirrels and hedgehogs: it's very much recommended that you bring your paintbox and your camera…
