  • Cornwall site with adjacent equestrian centre for lessons and hacks
  • Lake on site with valley views
  • Peaceful family farm site with plenty of room for play
Why the long face? Because you didn't canter to Camelford for a Cornwall holiday surrounded by all things horse? Neigh problem: race to Lakefield Caravan Park to remedy. A quiet farm park on the north Cornwall coast close to Camelford, Lakefield has its own British Horse School and Riding for the Disabled Association-approved equestrian centre attached, with classes and rides for all ages and abilities from beginner to experienced. Your horse-mad little person can even trot along to a Saturday pony club or have a pony-owning experience day… Other winning features on site are the stargazing – when it's dark here, it's really dark, points out the Lakefield team; the quiet, secluded setting (no bars or clubs here) and the handy location: although it's secludedly set, Lakefield's on a B road so is an excellent base for galloping all over Cornwall. Kids – and dogs – can roam with impunity around the big field for off-lead exercise (for dogs, not kids) and the big grassy area set aside for ball games, handily within eyeballing sight of most pitches. The whole site covers five acres, with lake and valley views on a 54-acre smallholding. All pitches at Lakefield are grass and well-spaced. The well-maintained amenities block has free hot showers, free hot water, a washing machine and a tumble dryer. The medieval market town of Camelford is a mile away and has shops and a leisure centre with indoor pool.

Liked Everyone we bumped into during our stay that worked there was very pleasant and knowledgable.
The park itself is very picturesque and peaceful. The facilities are wonderful, clean, modern and practical (the showers aren’t on a timer and have temperature control) I’m looking forward to staying again.

Liked Wonderfully quiet, we had the whole site to ourselves. We were there before the schools closed for the summer break and our only neighbours were small frogs and swifts flying around our legs catching the bugs we disturbed by walking in the grass. Magical.

Disliked Having to come home was a disappointment 😢

Liked Pitches were large. Decent toilet block. Wash up area. Quiet spot.
Central spot to visit Tintagel, Boscastle and Port Issac

Disliked Shower was poor and took a long time to sort any kind of warm water to come out of it.
As it's on a farm with horses the horse flies were a nuisance. Wearing long trousers was a must.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Excellent showers and wash up block. Nice location and flat ground for tents. The horses, geese and bunnies were nice to see.

Disliked Overall not much. The clothes dryer seemed to struggle to dry clothes. And you will hear the nearby wind turbines turning.

Liked I liked that it was a small site. Our pitch was perfect with no neighbours in adjacent pitches. We felt comfortable and relaxed. First campsite with showers you did not have to press and hold to work. Also, shower block was maintained really well.

No smell from the horses on site and my daughter enjoyed the lesson we booked whilst there.

So many beaches to choose from but our best was Polzeath for us.

We gave the lakefield 10/10 as although it was simple and compact we could not fault it. We had a great stay and enjoyed its basic charm.

Liked The shower block has been recently updated with nice hot, powerful showers. It's a very peaceful site and a good place to stay if you want to visit central and North Cornwall. Tintagel and Boscastle are within a few miles and Port Isaac, Bodmin, Wadebridge are all easily reached .

Local attractions

Ramble over moors or surf over waves from Lakefield Caravan Park: both Bodmin Moor and the sandy beaches of north Cornwall are close by. At Bodmin, take a walk around Rough Tor and Brown Willy, Cornwall's two highest points among its best-known landmarks; at the coast, the strong waves of nearby Trebarwith Strand are eminently suitable for surfing – and the 800 metre-long sands a top pick for sunbathing. On land, the Camel Trail, 11 miles away, is a good ride for families and has cycle hire in several spots. Popular Cornish day trips are within driving distance at Boscastle (five miles), Port Isaac (10 miles) and Padstow (19 miles). This is legendary country too, with the castle and village of King Arthur's Tintagel, six miles along the coast, now one of the most visited attractions in the land. It gets quite madly busy at Tintagel in summer, so for a less crowded experience, visit the Arthurian Centre at Slaughterbridge, a mile and a half from the site just outside Camelford. For those who fancy fishing, Crowdy Reservoir – a couple of miles from Lakefield – has free coarse fishing for Environment Agency rod licence holders from March to October.
