The Copper Pot Campsite: A view of the safari tent from the upper fire pit.

General

  • Eco-conscious rural rental tents a mile from Lower Metherell
  • In the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Bike hire on site and close to walking trails and canoe trips

To Cornwall, and Callington, and a cracking country break with a conscience. For not only is The Copper Pot Campsite in a most favourable location (bordering the National Trust’s Cotehele estate and in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), it’s also been purposely set up with low-impact, eco-friendly stays in mind.

It’s possible to drive, of course, but the folks here are mighty keen to encourage guests to seek alternatives, and they’ve gone all out to ensure that’s as easy as can be. For starters, if you arrive by train (at Gunnislake, 10 minutes away) they’ll happily sort transport to whisk you to the site; from then on you can hit the local walking trails or hire their bikes for two-wheeled touring.

Carting heaps of caboodle around isn’t an issue either, as they’ve provided all the bits and bobs you need for a break (well, most of it – you’ll still need to provide your own pants and the like). Rental tents are already set up with beds and bedding, and there’s plenty of cooking kit to help you prep meals in the well-equipped kitchen or out at the two campfire/barbecue areas (if you’ve not toddled off to the pub 10 minutes away, that is).

Other facilities are, as you’d imagine, similarly eco-conscious: the off-grid tents have LED lighting and are a short stroll from a bathroom with compost toilets and hot showers.

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Tents are not accepted at this park.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Wonderful, peaceful, reconnect with nature...07/30/2022

I love this site. James, the owner, has worked SO HARD to build it up. The tent pitches are well spaced so you have incredible privacy. The beds are incredibly comfortable, and plenty of blankets if the night is cold - we all slept better here than we have in months. the attention to detail is wonderful. The communal campfire, protected from the elements by a huge parachute is the perfect spot for evening cooking over the grill or toasting marshmallows over a separate campfire - lots of comfy chairs around to relax in. Gated, so safe for little ones. There's also a gas stove for less adventurous cooking and a kettle. My favourite spot is the breakfast bar/coffee perch in the kitchen area, looking through to glimpses of the view beyond the trees, but most importantly the birdfeeders, and the incredible numbers and variety of birds they attract - I could lose hours there.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike at all, but would recommend approaching from the North as the lane is a wee bit wider (via Harrowbarrow/Metherall) rather than Botherick... It's totally off-grid, so expect compost loos and no charging plugs (although there is pretty good phone reception, should you need it). There is a shower room though, with hot water, and space to get changed in private.

James welcomed us (2 adults, a toddler and a dog) with open arms and made us feel completely at home. He has made a beautiful campsite where you can stay with the luxury of comfortable beds and quiet rooms (we stayed in the shepherd hut) with hot showers amongst the beauty and calm of the Cornwall countryside. Three nights here felt like we’d been away for a week - we all unwound and relaxed in the calm environment. Our toddler loved exploring the forested paths and seeing the birds and various plants - we loved seeing this and then being able to enjoy an evening by the braai/firepit.

We will definitely return and recommend this little haven and its’ wonderful host wholeheartedly!

The back to nature approach, and being able to live disconnected from the world for a few days, very refreshing and James was incredibly welcoming and helpful! My children thoroughly enjoyed the adventure, as did my dogs!! Highly recommended! Talulah is such a cute shepherds hut! Such a beautiful setting for a weekend away from the madness of everyday life! Thank you Copper Pot!

The tents are lovely, spacious and comfortable and the communal areas are great for barbecuing or having a few drinks with the other campers. For kids the site is magical and fun. What really makes the place though is the host, James. He’s always around to help and chat. What he has done single handedly on sight is impressive and his knowledge of the area and wildlife is brilliant.

Loved being away from it all, amongst nature, under canvas but with the comfort of a proper bed! James and Hayley are great hosts and great company around the campfire! Loved that we could walk from the site to some beautiful and fascinating places, Cotehele, Calstock… Loved watching the birds come for breakfast while we boiled the kettle for our morning coffee. Love the whole ethos of what James is doing here. It’s amazing. Loved it all! Thank you so much!

Beautiful natural setting, good facilities, cosy , spacious hut and superb host! Particularly liked communal kitchen (with great birdspotting!) and under canopy fireside evenings.
Despite us landing on him with a very last minute booking, James, as a host would go out of his way to make sure you're happy while at the same time respectful and really knowledgeable about the flora and fauna and very much working with the protection of this in mind. He has some great ideas, and we wish him all the very best with his future plans! Can't wait to see them next time we visit!

Hidden away in the cornish hills is a kilt-wearing, animal-rescuing, wood-chopping man of the barbecue called James, who is a marvellous and most gracious host to anyone who wishes to visit his neck of the woods. He's built the site by himself, with the help of volunteers, and the care that he's invested shines through. Copper Pot will quickly feel like home. Each tent or hut is nestled away in its own private cubby, surrounded by trees and wildlife. James exhibits great care for the wildlife that shares the land with him and his guests. He understands each of their roles in the eco-system and shares his width of knowledge with you. During our stay he rescued an unwell pole cat which is hopefully recovering well as I'm writing. The communal fire pit and barbecue areas bring the site together, where you can spend the evenings keeping warm and enjoying some wood barbecued food. Board games, tea, coffee, mugs, plates, cutlery, bed sheets - it's all provided, which was very convenient for us as we traveled by train. You'll need to book taxis in advance if you don't have a car, but there's so much to see in the local area that you won't need a taxi every day. I hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did!

(I don't usually leave reviews but this deserved my time)

Ok, I would HIGHLY recommend this accommodation. We were originally looking for something closer to the coast but we saw the pictures and loved the look of the camp site. In the end, this location was excellent with stunningly beautiful countryside in all directions... we drove one of the days to Bude which was an easy drive and a very nice seaside town.

When we arrived at Copper Pot we were met by James, a very interesting man who obviously has put his whole life into making this camp site a wonderful place for his guests to stay. It really is beautifully done and its great being so close to nature which James has at the forefront of his mind when designing the site.

It has a great camp fire area, kitchen / bar and walkways through the garden/ wood.

The showers were powerful enough to enjoy the shower and they were hot. Again, all really nicely done.

The bell tent was large and had very comfortable beds with duvets and good pillows. There was plenty of room for a family of 4.

I couldn't think of anyways I would improve it...

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but be aware there are no plugs so bring a power pack for your phone, watch etc. OR you can just charge in the car when traveling to different places.

Directions

The site is keen to encourage travel by public transport, but if you’re driving please follow the instructions below rather than satnavs.

From Plymouth, follow the signs to Cotehele. Instead of turning right going over the bridge to Cotehele Quay, continue on the road towards Harrowbarrow. Turn right just before the Harrowbarrow sign and continue along this road until you get to the site on the right.

From Tavistock, take the A390 past Gunnislake, then take the left turn signposted for Metherell. In Metherell, take the left into Lower Metherell at the Cross House Inn, then follow the road round to a T-junction. Take the left turning and look out for the site on the right.

Please note: All distances on this page are calculated "as the crow flies" - please check actual distance depending on your mode of travel using the Get directions button above.

Local attractions

Kick off your local wanderings with an outing to the Cotehele estate: it’ll take you half an hour or so to walk over to the Tudor house to see the collections amassed by the Edgecumbe family over 600 years (including a giant pair of whale jawbones) and meander through the gardens and woodland paths. Trot back via Cotehele Mill to sample cakes and biscuits created from flour freshly ground with power from the Victorian waterwheel.

That cake isn’t just for fun – it’ll also provide essential fuel for guided canoe trips on the Tamar river from Cotehele Quay (an excellent excuse for a second biscuit), or a trip to the Tamar Trails Centre, five miles away, to walk the trails, career along the mountain bike tracks or pick your way along the treetop courses.

Biking types can also take the 20-minute pedal to the Drakes Trail for a traffic-free run all the way to Plymouth. If you have brought a car, it’ll take half an hour or to so get to Plymouth (to visit the aquarium, take a dip in the lido or sample the local gin), 15 minutes to the maize maze at Smeaton’s Farm or 50 minutes to the Eden Project’s famed plant-filled domes.
