  • Peaceful glamping site 10 minutes' walk from Kilkhampton
  • Sandymouth and Bude beaches within a 15-minute drive
  • Playground, massage room and cosy heated barn with barbecues
Happy news for those travelling light: bag a spot at East Thorne and there’s no need to haul heaps of gear along. At their peaceful place just outside Kilkhampton, Naomi and Adam have done their best to provide all the essentials for a tiptop Cornish break. Each of the glamping options here has been set up with a big comfy bed, electric supply, wifi and a woodburning stove to keep things toasty. Shunning the option of making guests squelch around in the mud, the folk here have built their units on sturdy wooden decks, with plenty of space to chill out round the table and sizzle sausages on the barbie. Lighting the coals isn’t your only cooking option: out on that deck there’s also a covered kitchen that’s well supplied with pans, crockery and the like, or you could try out the site’s woodfired clay oven. A farm shop is just up the road with various hampers available to order (or you could just stroll off to the pub in 10 minutes or so). Also around the site are a playground, a games room, a massage room, a heated barn area and plenty of space for the kids (and/or the grownups) to run about, ride bikes and play games. A top-notch bathroom building has rain showers and hairdryers for beautifying post-beach barnets. All of which leaves plenty of space in the car for fun stuff: buckets and spades are a good idea for Sandymouth beach, or perhaps a surfboard for catching waves in Bude – both are within 15 minutes’ drive of the site.

Local attractions

First stop, the beach. Or, more precisely, the beaches, for there are several very fine specimens around here. The long sandy stretch at Sandymouth (four miles away) is the nearest, but it’s also worth checking out the sea pool at Summerleaze, the rockpools at Crooklets and the excellent sunset spot of Widemouth Bay. This stretch of coast is also mighty popular with surfing types: Bude, six miles away, is the hub of action, with surf lessons on offer for those who need a hand with the ways of the waves. Paddleboarding, wakeboarding and an inflatable aqua park course are 20 minutes away at North Devon Wake Park. Sticking to dry land, there are loads of fab coastal walks nearby, and a rather viewsome golf course in Bude. For days out, the Milky Way Adventure Park is 20 minutes away by car, and the Eden Project is around an hour away.
