General

  • Back to basics site with uninterrupted views over the South Downs
  • A 25-minute drive from Chichester; half an hour from Portsmouth
  • Direct access to footpaths; walking distance from the South Downs Way

Hundred Acres Camping has space (and plenty of it) for back-to-basics hols in gorgeous green South Down surrounds.

This simple, rural spot is located in a natural meadow on a working farm, so facilities here are low-key (but basics like toilets are covered). It's a splendid pick for outdoor holidays with a human touch – the friendly owners (whose clan have worked this land for over 120 years) are full of advice about what to see while you're here – and they can help you include their favourite country inns in your itineraries, too.

Hundred Acres Camping is kid- and dog-friendly (although canine guests should be kept at a respectful distance from the sheep in the next field over). It's a hub for walkers, cyclists and horsey folk, too – top trails can be accessed directly from the site, including (if you walk for about a quarter of an hour along a bridleway) the long-distance South Downs Way.

An independent local café is about a mile away from site in Compton; a top-rated local pub is a five-minute drive away in West Marden. The closest supermarket is in Petersfield (15 minutes’ drive).

Friendly, spacious site in lovely location. Massively over priced.09/06/2020

The space, the location and the friendliness of the staff who delivered our logs and fire pit!

    Disliked:

The toilets were just portaloos which I hadn't expected. I knew there were no showers but I felt the cost of camping here was over inflated to have blocked, uncleaned portaloos, and one cold tap serving the whole field.

Having to take all 3 bags of rubbish, including bags of dog poo home - not great when travelling in a tightly packed car for two hours.

Shocking value for a neglected empty field.08/26/2020

Very simple with lovely walks nearby. Staff were friendly.

    Disliked:

Value for money was shocking, this campsite is clearly only for when all other sites are fully booked so they can charge three times the price for an empty field. This campsite costs three times as much as any other campsite, but has 0 facilities. For a third of this price I had showers, electricity, bins and all of the basics you expect just a couple of weeks before. The only sign of any facilities were two portaloos which had not been cleaned or refilled with water and disinfectant any of the times I used them. The only time we saw any staff was when they arrived to collect money. They didn’t even provide bins to put your rubbish in so people had been leaving bags of rubbish by the portaloos. If you have any other option please take it, this is just a place for when all other options are fully booked. Even the ground here is terrible for camping, it is full of flint and is far from ideal. I imagine that this place is a family run business that stems from the fact that a farmer has a spare bit of land which isn’t good enough quality to use for anything else, and therefore is being used to make extra money on the side for the farmer by charging extortionate prices for people with no other option.

So much space! You can pitch where you like so long as your 5m away from another tent. There’s a tap on a post and 5 portaloos, all you need for a night.

    Disliked:

We were unfortunate that the extended family camped next to us were noisy until 3am. They had even brought a karaoke machine. The campsite rules state quite after 11am, but they were obviously not enforced.
