  • Adults-only wild camping on a farm in the South Downs National Park
  • Storrington five minutes’ drive; Bignor Roman Villa 15 minutes
  • Peaceful woodland setting; well-behaved dogs welcome
Hilly trails, Roman ruins, nature reserves and beaches – staying at Sparright Farm puts you within close driving distance of all these and more. Granted, you might have to forego some comforts (there are no showers, for example), but the location, right in the heart of the South Downs National Park, more than makes up for the somewhat spartan facilities. What’s more, this is an adults-only site, so there won't be any noisy kids running around and waking you up at ungodly o’ clock. Do you like the sound of that? Then read on… You can set up among the pine and chestnut trees, right on the forest floor (incidentally, the woodland location means that barbecues and campfires are not allowed), where your dog might enjoy picking up different scents and going on long walkies. (Please keep an eye on your four-legged friend and make sure it doesn’t chase the resident farmyard animals.) The site comes with a portable toilet and running water (not hot), plus expansive views across the South Downs from the picnic area. Speaking of picnics… There’s a village store in Amberley (five minutes’ drive or a 45-minute walk), or you can head to Storrington (five minutes) for supermarkets, greengrocers and a couple of butcher’s shops, plus restaurants, cafés and takeaways.

Liked The forest floor pitch was beautiful, the toilet was kept very clean and smelled fresh. The water tap was a short walk away from the camping pitch giving a lot of privacy.

Primitive forest floor tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great site for minimalist camping. Quiet & lots of spaces to choose from. Just what we were looking for on an overnight SDW bike tour. Walked up to the Sportsman for good food & beer.

Lovely secluded site with a wild feel to it. The perfect quick stop.

Primitive forest floor tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Beautiful setting, quiet, with the closest to a "wild camping" feel I've had in this country. We were only stopping over for a night, so it was perfect for what we needed.

Disliked There isn't any signage out front, so the place was a bit tricky to find.

From the manager: The rating of 1/10 for child friendliness is irrelevant as this is an adults only site.

They arrived at 6.30 pm and left first thing so how can a 5/10 rating for facilities/ activities be relevant?

If they want to wild camp in a woodland why do they expect WiFi - we hardly have it in the house!

I always wanted to have a delightful experience for my camping as…

Primitive forest floor tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked I always wanted to have a delightful experience for my camping as it was my very first time in the UK. From the moment we arrived until our reluctant departure, every aspect contributed to a memorable getaway.

The camp setup was thoughtfully designed, striking a wonderful balance between being immersed in nature. Our pitch was spacious and well-maintained, providing ample room for our tent and gear without feeling cramped. The facilities, while basic as expected for a camp, were clean and easily accessible.. The overall ambience of the camp was incredibly peaceful, allowing for true relaxation and a genuine connection with the outdoors.

The entire stay felt like a much-needed reset. The day was spent exploring, taking a stroll to the nearest pub for a pint, and evenings were a tranquil affair, far removed from the usual hustle and bustle. As guests, we felt incredibly welcomed. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, making it easy to settle in and enjoy our surroundings.

The accessible paths directly from the camp were a highlight. We embarked on several walks for the day, offering a gentle stroll. The paths were easy.

The Host was simply welcoming. From the initial booking communication to our departure, they were incredibly responsive, helpful, and genuinely warm. They provided excellent local recommendations for walks and amenities, and were available to answer.

We left feeling refreshed, rejuvenated. Recommended for anyone seeking a peaceful and authentic outdoor experience!

Local attractions

The grasslands, wetlands and wildflower meadows at RSPB Pulborough Brooks (five minutes’ drive) attract lapwings, ducks and dragonflies, plus small falcons. There's more birdlife at Amberley Wild Brooks (10 minutes), a nature reserve on the banks of the River Arun. Discovered by chance in the early 19th century, Bignor Roman Villa (15 minutes) was probably the home of an aristocratic family. It’s renowned for its well-preserved floor mosaics, including one portraying fighting gladiators in full armour, and for the ruins of an underfloor heating system. There are also displays of excavated objects such as helmets. With the West Sussex coast about half an hour away, it would seem churlish not to spend a day at the seaside. Backed by sandy dunes, Littlehampton’s dog-friendly West Beach is popular for swimming and fishing; or you can head to Worthing for a stroll along the 19th-century pier and fish and chips on the shingle.
