  • In the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • On 20 acres of grassland dotted with woodland copses
Is back-to-basics camping your thing? Check yourself into the peaceful, popular Hook Farm near Haywards Heath in West Sussex. This is 'back-to-basics fun camping in its truest sense,' say the Hook Farm owners… and in a most enviable location too, as the farm is in a remote and grippingly scenic setting in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The pitches are in the south-facing valley on the farm, so they are all original and some are set on sloping land. They are spread over several grassy meadows with small woodland copses dotted around the site, and carefully designed to have a minimal impact on the environment and landscape, with no permanent buildings and no main roads (cattle graze the site in the winter months too). The site facilities include composting (not flushing) toilets, hot showers, and cold running water; as the owners say, those looking for state-of-the-art facilities might not find Hook Farm the site for them. But if you're looking for family-friendly countryside camping done old school style, with heaps of space, campfires allowed, a no-music policy and plenty of room for the kids to run safely around? Hook Farm should surely lure you in.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The area, the size of the campsite

Disliked Most pitches on a slope of sorts. Compost toilets not normal ones. Kept awake by a noisy party in a house nearby (not the campsites fault, but contributed to a rubbish sleep)

Nice site, well run, questionable flatness for a campsite.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The “vibe” lots of friendly campers and families with young children.
Not over crowded, friendly, helpful staff.
Nice warm showers.
Good provision of fresh water + toilets in many places.

Disliked I’ve seen compost toilets run better (be used better) - I think maybe signage / education could help here. The staff were in obvious, regular attendance of the toilets.

The site is very hilly / lacks many level spots. We were lucky to find a mostly level pitch.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Lovely setting with lots of space and woods for the children to play.

Disliked There was no obvious place to recycle things, so everything had to go in the bin, which wasn't great. The site is also under the Gatwick flight path, so it's pretty noisy with planes from about 4am. The site is very hilly with level places to pitch very few and far between.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked All great.
Very spacious pitches with loads of free space between tents.
You have nearly wild camping experience.
Owners don't bother you every few minutes either, so you have loads of privacy.

Disliked Some pitches are on little slopes, so slipping can be challenging if you position your tent incorrectly 😜😉

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Beautiful setting. Felt very off grid. Large campsite which meant even though there were a good number of other campers you felt like you had plenty of space.

Facilities were more than adequate - although the showers weren't hot. But this wasnt a problem since it was a heat wave!

Disliked Not very level pitches. If it gets very busy it could be difficult to find a flat spot.

Recommend to friends Visit again

Peaceful location, plenty of space, hot showers but on a slope mostly.

Primitive grass campervan campsite (sloping)

Liked The view, peace, birds and size of site meant it didn't feel busy. The showers were hot and well planned, plenty of space to get changed and hang clothes etc.

Disliked Not a lot of flat areas to park a campervan but i knew that before I went so was prepared to park on a slope.
The state of the compost toilets - I don't think this was the fault of the site as I saw them check and clean them in the evening and morning. More the fault of the other campers who didn't seem to care how they treated them despite there being clear instructions in each toilet. So they were smelly and dirty most of the time sadly. Compost toilets can be brilliant if used correctly so it was sad to see them misused.

Primitive grass campervan campsite (sloping)

Liked The peaceful and natural surroundings. We have not used the showers but they looked nice.

It was very calm and campers were not on top of each others. We liked the rule about no music.

Disliked Not a criticism but be aware:

The camping is on massive slopes and we struggled to find somewhere flat for the VW van.

And because of heavy rainfall (nobody's fault) during our stay we struggled to get the van up the slope and out of the camping site. We had to push the van which was sliding.

Local attractions

As might have been mentioned, Hook Farm is in an enviable location enveloped by the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; several walking trails and bridleways linking Weald villages and through splendid scenery lead directly from the site. Brighton is less than 20 miles away too for city days or nights out. Recommended options in the region include the colourful steam railway ride from East Grinstead to Sheffield Park on the Bluebell Railway, an 11-mile journey along the border between East and West Sussex, or wildlife watching at one or more of the Weald's couple of dozen nature and RSPB reserves. Ardingly Reservoir, close to Hook Farm, also has yachting, sailing, canoeing and hooking samples in pike, carp, tench, coarse and match fishing. At Ardingly village less than a mile from the farm, the National Trust's Wakehurst Gardens is a popular day out for the green-fingered as it's managed by London's Kew Gardens and is home to three national tree collections, England's biggest Christmas tree and the millennium seed bank, set up with the aim of preserving seeds from all native flora in the UK. (Kenneth Branagh's version of As You Like It was filmed here too if you feel like being dramatic among the trees.) Next door to Wakehurst Gardens, the South of England Showground should keep most tastes occupied with its events attended by tens of thousands throughout the year, including the South of England Show and dozens of public events. And if it's gardens you're after, plenty are within easy reach: try out Standen, Borde Hill and High Beeches just to start you off. Finally, fancy some forest to go with the woodland on the farm? Ashdown Forest is a six-mile trot from Hook Farm and has walking trails, pony trekking and other outdoor options.
