Highland cattle a short walk away

  • Secluded wild meadow camping on a working farm in rural West Sussex
  • A 20-minute drive from the South Downs National Park and Petworth
  • Highland cattle and wildlife on site; pub five minutes’ drive away
Hidden away among 60 acres of wildflower meadows, Cattlestone Farm’s field is surrounded by ancient woodland in the glorious West Sussex countryside. At this adults-only site, you're welcome to choose your own pitch. The proud custodians of the fourth-generation farm are Alan and Donna, who produce top-quality hay and have introduced Highland cows and a bull – no doubt you’ll see them grazing in neighbouring fields. Other wildlife that you might spot on site include resident deer, buzzards, tawny owls and red kites – and to preserve this magical natural setting, it’s strictly no large parties here please. Well-behaved dogs, on the other hand, are welcome. Simple facilities include showers and washing-up areas at the toilet block, and a decent wifi connection if you can’t quite give up on the outside world. There are numerous public footpaths and bridleways close by, and the farm is flanked by award-winning vineyards, country pubs (the closest is five minutes by car) and historic villages. There are lots of options for eating out within half an hour’s drive, but if you’d rather curl up around the barbecue, stock up on goodies in handy stores and regular farmers’ markets in Petworth (20 minutes’ drive).

What customers say

Cattlestone Farm earns top marks for its quiet vibe, roomy, tidy sites, and spotless restrooms/showers. Guests love the friendly owners, farm animal encounters, and scenic walks. Minor gripes include weak WiFi and tricky gear hauling due to car limits. A great spot for a relaxing rural getaway.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Peaceful, nice sized pitch, good space between pitches. The facilities were great. Lovely spacious hot showers which you have full control of. Well stocked washing up area. Lovely being able to stroll around the farm and feed the highland coo’s hay. Would be nice to have something to sit on and watch the coo’s. Good value for money too

Disliked Nothing

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Really cute farm with defined huge level pitches which ensure decent distance in between tents/campervans. All of the pitches have a sectioned off gap between them with at least 2 metres of hay growing. We didn’t end up having anyone next to us but if we did, it would give a really nice gap for sure. I think the whole field was really well thought out. The toilets and showers were really nice. Always clean and the water was lovely and hot. There is also a covered washing up station with washing up liquid etc and a small chest freezer for ice packs. We walked further into the farm and saw the cows and a few goats. It’s a really cute place. The staff were absolutely lovely and drive round every afternoon to offer firewood and fire pits.

Disliked We had a very unfortunate case of a loud group of boys on our first night, however the owners were excellent and came out in the evening to give a warning to the boys and also gave me their personal number to text if any issues. Cannot fault the owners at all with how great they were. I did have to go out at past midnight to ask them to be quiet, and they settled down but it was quite annoying. The second night we were there it was SO quiet (all of the campers were just couples) and it was heavenly. It is quite close to the road as well, and there are some very loud cars/bikes driving and backfiring on the country roads. Absolutely cannot be controlled by the campsite but just bear in mind. Large metal trolleys are offered to take things from the car to the pitch as cars are not allowed on the field which I really liked, however, I was quite surprised then by the amount of campervans and caravans or cars with tent boxes driving on the field. I get that’s unavoidable but packing away in the rain with the trolleys felt a bit obsolete when campers were also driving on the field. Other than the farm, there wasn’t much else around. It’s easy to drive somewhere of course and there are lots of nice places around but we just wanted to stay off grid ideally. We didn't explore any walking routes around but I’m sure there are some. For the wifi, I did check if I could find it but I couldn’t. I wasn’t bothered as I don’t want wifi when camping really.. but at least at the pitches furthest away from the facilities, I didn't find any wifi.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Absolutely beautiful site, great security with coded entry, loads of space with massive it he's that are well spaced out. Facilities are excellent, they have the rustic feel but are top notch. Showers were hit and excellent water pressure with loads of room to change. Hosts were amazing, brilliant communication and warm welcome but let you get on with it, they did log drops for fires and the small touches like the trolleys for luggage and hand wash and dish soap just made it. Wonderful surroundings with loads to see and the animals on the farm were just the best.

Disliked Honestly nothing, maybe a few more shaded areas to choose from for pit he's but that's really hard to do with such an amazingly open space.

Liked Great facilities, friendly feel, nice location and large pitches, all good. Would recommend to other campers, we were in a roof tent, but lots of ground tents and had chilled peaceful vibe.
Freezer was a great addition to chill down ice packs.
Showers were super hot and clean as well.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Lovely venue. Used the camping field and appreciated the marked pitches, ample space and level. Didn't use the option for campfire, although great to have this option provided by the hosts.
Showers and toilets were very clean (4 of each which was plenty).
Owners were great (including gorgeous new puppy). Enjoyed the opportunity to walk around the open areas of the farm and see the Highland cattle, pigs and goats.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Peaceful, well thought out and marked pitches. Nothing but bird noise. The toilets were spotless. Great communication from owners with gate codes etc. Safe and secure location. Will definitely stay again if in the area.

Disliked I thought I read on pitch up that there were stunning views of the south downs and neighbouring highland cattle. However the camping fields are flanked by thick tree lines so there are no views. It didn't spoil our experience though.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Friendly campsite owners. Good spacious pitches. Spotless showers and toilets. Fire pits allowed. Liked the natural vibe and it being an adult only site.

Disliked WiFi coverage was poor - although this did help to ‘switch off’ for the weekend

Local attractions

Hikers can tick off sections of the South Downs Way and walk up to National Trust-owned Devil’s Dyke (35 minutes’ drive) for views across the chalk escarpment of the South Downs National Park (20 minutes). To see a re-wilding initiative successfully at work, walk the permissive trails at Knepp Castle Estate (10 minutes). Exploring historic market towns couldn’t be easier. Petworth has a choice of indie shops in Georgian-era buildings, while Midhurst (35 minutes) has a photogenic mix of architecture from a Norman castle to half-timbered buildings. Stately Arundel (half an hour) is worth a trip for its castle and cathedral, and Chichester (40 minutes) is a clever rainy-day option thanks to the lively schedule at its renowned theatre. Down on the south coast, you’ve also got a choice of destinations. Get in the car and head to the beach at Worthing (25 minutes) for watersports galore and family cycle rides along the promenade. In lively Brighton, you can pick up antique bargains in The Lanes shops or take a guided tour of the colourful and ornate Brighton Pavilion.
