General

  • Simple and wardened accommodation in a converted and listed barn
  • On the North Downs Way and Sustrans Route 22
  • Shared sleeping area, modern kitchen, local pubs and scenic walks

Puttenham Eco Camping Barn has simple overnight accommodation in south-east England for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, on a site with with a strong environmental emphasis.

The camping barn provides wardened accommodation, similar to but more basic than a youth hostel. It's in west Surrey on the North Downs Way and Sustrans Cycle Route 22, between Guildford and Farnham at a point not served by any youth hostels. The barn sleeping platform, divided into three areas, is the accommodation part of the site; there's no space for tents outside. Guests should bring their own sleeping bag or hire one from the site team.

The barn is an old listed building, sympathetically restored to be environmentally friendly and so that guests can see the traditional and sustainable construction methods used. Facilities on site include rainwater harvesting, solar electricity, solar hot water, a lockable cycle storage shed (designed by cyclists), and a communal kitchen and a shower-room.

The site does its best to cater for people with disabilities.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not be for more than 8 consecutive nights.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars are allowed on site, even for unloading: this is an eco-friendly site.

The site is suitable only for people aged five and older.

I will tell all story . We arrived at the barn, and after we talked about our accomodation, the volunter that was there warner of the barn told us that we are not suitable as guests with no reason, the only thing she said it was that this was her decision at a first impression. We came from birmingham after a 3 and a half hour ride with loads of traffic, just to return. We tried to discuss with her about this situation and tell her that we do not agree with her decision as specially that she had no intention of giving back the hole amount wich was 300£ . She wanted to retain the deposit of 45£ for nothing. She was not willing to give us an explination why she refused our stay when we had 4 kids with us as well(2 year old old, 3 year old, 6 year old and 7 year old) and she demand us to leave straight away from her property, that she ended this conversation and we must go. I would’t recomand this place to nobody! I am using the word : discrimination, because we are not english and some of us were talking in are native language. You can judge a person without knowing her. Is not our first experience in camping on barn, but defineltly first bad experience with this kind of people. So at the end , we leave the place and return to birmingham at hour 21 very dissapointed. I would't recomand this place.I Attached picture with her closing the gate and barn in front off us.

From the manager...

We are profoundly sorry for the misunderstanding that has happened, for our Camping Barn has always welcomed people whatever their background – as our visitors’ book shows - and sought to promote goodwill and tolerance. Our warden denies any suggestion of discrimination and having known her over a number of years, we are absolutely sure this was the situation.

Our warden’s note was unfortunately worded. It should have read “Our accommodation was not suitable for your needs".

Our understanding is that the group said at the camping barn that they wanted to have a barbecue in our garden, with a party going on till after 11pm. However, our lease and position very close to other properties means that we have to adhere to a number of rules, including no barbecues (there is a symbol indicating this on the Pitchup website), being quiet and finishing activities by 11pm. One of these conditions is that we have no car-parking – even for off-loading – in the surrounds to our Eco Camping Barn (a Local Authority condition), yet the group parked three vehicles in this way contrary to the advance information sent them, and the restriction being clear on the website.

However, we now recognise that not all such conditions were made clear enough in our Pitchup listing and we will put this right. Because of our failings, we promptly apologised for our action by phone on the morning after the visit and promised a full return of all the money (including deposit) the group had paid together with a further sum for expenses; we confirmed this by e-mail later the same day.

Local attractions

This is a top spot to bunk down for a night if you’re on a long-distance ramble or bike ride. If you fancy stopping for a little longer there are loads more walks and rides to be had through the Surrey hills, including the Christmas Pie cycle route from Farnham to Guildford, and a series of circular walks from Puttenham.

More eco-conscious days out can be had by hiring rowing boats from Farncombe Boat House or taking a horse-drawn narrowboat trip from Godalming. Or you might set out again on two wheels or two feet to visit local landmarks: the walled gardens and 16th-century house of Loseley Park are three miles away, and it’s worth dropping in to the Watts Gallery artists’ village enroute.

With all this hoofing about it’s likely you’ll have earned yourself a beer or two, so it’s a fine plan to set out for the Hogs Back Brewery three miles away in Tongham, where you can see the ale making in action and sample the wares.
