  • Peaceful farm site at the south of the Surrey Hills National Landscape
  • A 20-minute drive from Horsham; half an hour from the South Downs
  • Farm produce such as chicken, burgers and sausages for sale on site
You're free to pick any spot that takes your fancy at Etherley Farm, a roomy farm site at the very south of the Surrey Hills National Landscape. Around an hour and a half's drive south of London, this is a pretty handy location indeed, 20 minutes' drive away from Horsham and the High Weald National Landscape and half an hour from the South Downs National Park. The site has basic facilities including water, individual showers and a toilet block, but no electric hook-ups. Although the poultry farm at Etherley isn't open to visitors, it's a different matter for guests, who can bag some of its mouthwatering produce for their barbecue: chicken, burgers and sausages are all on sale (just drop the owners a line stating what you’d like when you book). Small fires are welcome on site, just not during dry/hot periods and only on previously burnt areas, a safe distance away from neighbours or tents. You can't take any wood from the surrounding National Trust woodland, so instead the site sells bags of logs from their local produce shop. Alternatively, bring your own, ensuring it's free from nails and screws.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Farm shop and person working there, the surrounding area, toilets and shower areas were clear and in good use. The timings were great you could turn up pretty early and leave late!

Disliked Unable to have a fire although completely understandable due to the extreme heat and dry weather but just bad timing for us as we got an email the day before saying we couldn’t use our gas stove unless raised off the ground and we had no way to do this (again no one’s fault).

The only other thing was that we camped to watch the meteor shower and there were 3 unnecessarily bright security lights that would go off frequently and light up the whole field at 2am (not when people were walking by) so it unfortunately ruined the dark sky. You could see the toilets anyway because of the light shining out of the door. I would recommend removing the security lights and leaving perhaps a dim one for the washing area only

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Fantastic campsite with two fields to choose from and plenty of space even on an August weekend. Clean showers and toilets. A farm shop if you need anything.

Disliked Just a suggestion - more mirrors and hooks for belongings in the communal bathroom block. We struggled with only three basins and mirrors in the toilet block in the mornings. People were shaving, putting on make up and cleaning teeth. Then someone needed to wash their hands from going to the toilet. It got very awkward and any towels or wash bags ended up in the floor.
