  • Simple site with woodland trails in the High Weald countryside
  • A 15-minute drive from walks, fishing and watersports on Bewl Water
  • Campfires welcome on site; pubs five minutes' drive away in Pembury
No long faces. No saying you’re bored. No staring at a tiny screen and waiting for something to happen: those are the rules at Strictly Camping in the Kent countryside. Actually, there’s no need for such rules on this quiet and simple site: it’s a five-minute drive from the village of Pembury and 10 minutes from Royal Tunbridge Wells, with the sort of space, peace and views anyone would want on any rural break. Surrounded by fields, and woods filled with birds, bluebells and wild garlic, this is a place to sit and savour the outdoors. When you’ve done enough sitting (and some need more than others…), take yourself off on bikes or on foot to explore the trails through the countryside; if you find your footsteps flagging after a while, fling up a hammock between the trees for a well-earned 40 winks. Campfires are positively encouraged out here, for cooking or just for sitting round and warming toes. If you prefer your sausages not served on a stick, there’s a pair of pubs with hot food in Pembury. Once you’re well fuelled, make your way to Bewl Water (15 minutes) for sailing and canoeing, walks, bike rides and swims.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (woodland)

Liked We enjoyed the woodland pitches, but also enjoyed being able to go to the communal area to soak up some sun. It was a peaceful retreat in nature and had all of the amenities we needed. Close enough to local shops to buy our dinner and cook it over the fire. Jamie was a kind host who made sure we were cared for. Spacious pitch with room to spread out.

Facilities were clean and useable. Woowoo toilets were good. Bob good

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Peaceful, flat, easy ground for pitching. Bob, who met us on arrival, gave us good choices re woodland, open field etc.
The site was quiet so we wondered whether the site is in a growing phase….certainly the number of toilets and washing up facilities would not cope with large numbers of campers

Disliked Lack of wash basins. Few of the camping friends we know would go to a site without sufficient wash basins, let alone none.

Great location to camp in woodlands with proper campfire.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (woodland)

Liked Nice location with woodland pitches. Each pitch has a covered "kitchen" area with basic prep table and a bin. Toilets and showers are very clean, with hot water available. Massive 60 acre land to explore, with lots of wildlife. If you're lucky you can see deers in the woodland and rabbits across the park. Perfect for bushcraft fun with kids. The owner is really friendly and helpful.

Disliked On a minor downside, unfortunately the sound of the nearby motorway with revving motorbikes can be heard at night.

Great stay.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (woodland)

Liked Location was great with really easy access from London, but far enough to feel like your really out in the sticks.

Bob was amazing and provided us with anything extra we needed.

Woodland pitches were spaced out enough to really feel like you were on your own.

Toilets and showers were unbelievably nice and extremely clean. Can't say I've camped somewhere with facilities this good.

Highly recommend and will be revisiting!

Primitive forest floor campervan campsite (woodland, maximum 6 metres)

Liked Great site, nice and quiet and feels very secluded. Large pitches (we were in the woods) with lots of distance between pitches. Great walks around the woods in the site. Lots of nature, saw some deer. The tent pitches in the field and the glam ping field look lovely too. Some of the compost toilets around the site very nice and well kept.
Firepits on all pitches, very friendly owner.

Disliked I'm not a huge fan of portaloos so avoided them.
Brother in law came to visit for an afternoon with his partner. We're asked to pay £10 per person to visit (arrived at about 3pm) then told once they had paid they had to be off site by 5 pm. Understandable that they don't want lots of people visiting, but £10 per person for a couple of hours was quite steep.

Local attractions

One of the cutest and furriest of the locals, Winnie the Pooh, was dreamed up on walks around Ashdown Forest (40 minutes' drive): visit the inspiration for the Hundred Acre Wood, the Heffalump Trap and Eeyore’s Quiet And Gloomy Place amid walking trails and wildlife. If you need an extra fix of the furries, call in at the llama park enroute. If you’re more into castles and stately homes, you can more or less pick with a pin: flower fans and garden gurus may prefer Scotney and Sissinghurst (15 and 25 minutes away) for their elaborate horticultural arrangements; if you're mad about moats and turrets and blood-soaked history, make the half-hour trip to Hever and Leeds castles. For a gentler kind of heritage day, the steam engines of the Spa Valley Railway chuff their way sedately through the High Weald countryside between Tunbridge Wells and Eridge (10 and 20 minutes), and within an hour you can be tucking into fish and chips while you build your sandcastles down at Camber Sands.
