Cosy inside and with gorgeous views outside – if that sounds like a splendid mix, then set off for the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a self-catering stay at Gabriel's Rest, a gorgeous little shepherd’s hut on a Kent working farm.
This peaceful retreat has been parked at Pococksgate Farm, a mile south of the village of Frant and 10 minutes’ drive from Royal Tunbridge Wells. It’s all very peaceful here, and with far-reaching views across the Sussex landscape to admire while you chill out. Fancy a closer look at some of that countryside? The Sussex Border Path runs through the farm, and there’s access to plenty more footpaths nearby for days of rural rambling.
In fact there are lots of reasons to get out and about around here… maybe you’d like to take a tour of one/some of the area’s castles and stately homes, stroll around Bedgebury Pinetum or head to the coast for the day? Closer to home are several village pubs and cafés within a mile or so’s journey for snacks and evening meals.
Wherever you choose to roam, you’ll be coming back to a well-appointed hut that’s got all sorts of handy things provided to make life more comfortable. It’s got a woodburning stove and underfloor heating, plus a sofa, a TV and a kitchen with induction hob, fridge and microwave. The ensuite bathroom has a shower, toilet, basin and heated towel rail, and towels provided.
Outside, the decking area is all set for an alfresco evening, with a table and chairs, plus a firepit that can be used as a barbecue (with firewood included in the price of your stay).

Local attractions
This part of the world is packed with gorgeous buildings to visit, so you can pick your favourite or plan a tour taking in several. Hever Castle and Bodiam Castle, for example, are both about half an hour’s drive away and both worth a trip. Penshurst Place (25 minutes’ drive) and Chartwell (35 minutes) are other options on this front.
Several of these also have fine gardens – but if you really want that to be the focus, aim for Sissinghurst Castle Garden (35 minutes) or Great Dixter House and Gardens (40 minutes). And if you’d rather keep your landscapes natural, try the trails at Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest or Ashdown Forest (both 25 minutes).
Fishing and watersports are on the menu for active types at Bewl Water (20 minutes), but if it’s seaside you seek then head south for 45 minutes or so towards the towns of Hastings, Eastbourne and Rye for beach days and coastal walks.
