  • Family-friendly, back to basics farm site in the Kent countryside
  • A 25-minute drive to Royal Tunbridge Wells and Hever Castle & Gardens
  • Barbecues and firepits permitted; pubs a short drive away; woodlands
Get your relaxation on in the peaceful Kent patch at Grove Fields Camping… this family-friendly site is a back to basics place that doesn’t overcomplicate relaxation, but the scenery or vibes aren’t understated at all, as it’s two miles from the edge of the High Wealds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and spread over 100 acres of private-feeling land with all the splendid rural views you could need. That means the kids will have plenty of space to do what kids do, and in between, there are rare breeds such as Valais Blacknose and Greyfaced Dartmoor sheep that they can peep at. Dogs have their place here too, but they must be kept on leads around the livestock (there are some nice winding trails around the woodlands bordering the site). It’s not tricky to find a walk to wake yourself up on a morn (or an afternoon, depending on whether you’ve had a lie in), as walks, leisurely bike rides or feelgood picnics are made for Haysden Country Park (15 minutes' drive), close by Barden Lake’s fishery (15 minutes). Pitches are spacious here, and you’ll have the convenience of parking by your pitch. Simple is the guiding principle, you see, as there are no electric hook-ups or showers, just running water and outdoor toilets. Barbecues and campfires have the green light, as long as they’re supervised by a grownup. For meals without the food prepping, local pubs are a short drive away, but those of you doing your own thing will find shops for supplies in Hildenborough, under 10 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

You might already know Kent for its public manors, castles and gardens, but if not, you’ll soon be familiar. The National Trust owns a couple, including Churchill’s old home at Chartwell (25 minutes’ drive) and the deer park, royal rooms and attics at Knole (15 minutes). As for mapping out the way to castles, you’ll want to put your pin on Hever Castle & Gardens (25 minutes). The childhood home of Anne Boleyn, this fortress has lose-yourself worthy mazes and gardens, as well as regular family-friendly activities. Another place to get happily lost, the 13th-century Tonbridge Castle (10 minutes) runs audio tours. But back to the present, you’ll be all immersed in nature at the Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve (20 minutes), a hot birdwatching spot. And as for Royal Tunbridge Wells (25 minutes), well, this is the place to count off the boutiques, galleries and shops along The Pantiles Georgian colonnade. Come summertime, jazz concerts and other events bring this market town to life too.
