  • Quiet site in the Kent Downs, a 15-minute drive from Faversham
  • Leeds Castle 20 minutes’ drive; Canterbury and Whitstable half an hour
  • Hot showers powered by solar panels, charging points for electric cars
If you’re in charge of organising the family rally this year, you might want to consider booking at Palace Farm Campsite, in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You’ll be staying on a large field in the village of Doddington, with rural views all around – yet only a 15-minute drive from the towns of Sittingbourne and Faversham. If you value your peace, you’ll be glad to hear that this is a quiet site after 10pm. Please note that this is strictly enforced – when it comes to guests, at least. There are no measures in place to keep woodpeckers, owls and pheasants from lulling you to sleep with their songs and hoots. You can explore the local area on foot or by bike (the owners will be happy to point you to the best paths and bridleways), stopping at a traditional country pub for a few ales. Alternatively, you can tee off at Faversham Golf Club or fish at the Willows Angling Centre, and there is a swimming pool in Faversham to keep the kids occupied on rainy days (all 15 minutes’ drive). Canterbury is half an hour away and well worth a visit for its spectacular medieval cathedral. Well equipped and environmentally conscious, the site has solar panels creating hot water for the showers and washing-up sinks; there are flushing toilets and a parent-and-baby washroom, plus recycling points and charging points for electric cars. The nearest farm shop is a mere seven-minute walk away.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Great location, big pitch size, clean toilets and showers, allows camp fires and dog friendly pub just down the road.

Disliked: Possibly not enough toilets and showers if the site was fully booked but was fine when we stayed as not that busy

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The surroundings, the countryside walks are amazing and not something I was expecting! The site was simple and quiet although there was only a few campers there, toilets were very clean and spacious, well equipped and showers were good although there was no dry area to dress before you left the shower.

Disliked: Unfortunately it was spoilt by the owners attitude when we first arrived on site I knocked on the door to the office but there was no reply and the lights were off, after waiting for at least 30 seconds I walked back to my car and when the door opened I was told very rudely by the owner of the site had I’ve gone onto the tent pitches and I would have been trespassing!! He also rudely snapped at me that he had just had his knees done and couldn’t move fast, I understood that but there was no need to make me feel that unwelcome, given the fact I had paid in advance, supplied my name and address and the reg of my car I wouldn’t agree that I was trespassing as both sides had agreed on the terms of the stay. Wasn’t a good start and we almost left but it was a rare night for us, I even joked we would be fine as we had wine with us and the response was ‘ oh is that all it’s about is drinking?’ Was the response from the man, suggesting we were there to get drunk how dare he insinuate this. Aside from the 2 page A4 sheet of rules we were given when we booked in!
Won’t stay here again.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Proximity to Faversham and Whitstable was useful.
The hosts were helpful and friendly.
Bird song was beautiful in the morning but they struggled against the sound of the motorway.

Disliked: The constant noise from the motor way even though we felt quite far from it was a real turn off for this site. We went for peace and quiet but could always hear it through the bird song.
The shower room lights didn't work so when you shut the door it was dark inside. Ended up using the disabled one so we could put the light above the mirror on with the pull cord.
There was a field of thistles next door and another one of grass the other side but nowhere very nice or interesting to walk the dog from the site. Good walks if you drove away.
There was an encouragement to hire their fire pits which we did but they were so low to the ground they ended up scorching the grass any way.

From the manager: Hi, thanks for your review. It may have been unfortunate that we had a constant northerly wind which does carry the sound of the M2 motorway which is just under a mile north of the campsite, normally we don't hear it. Many of our campers who live in towns and cities appreciate how much quieter it is in the countryside.
I checked the showers and both the disabled room and the left hand shower have working lights, switched by an infra red sensor. The right hand side shower light has been vandalised, on our first weekend open at that and is only switching on when quite dark outside.
I think you should have explored our surrounding countryside a bit more as there are some wonderful walks for those with dogs. We have maps that you could have asked for which will show any walkers why this is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The top of the field next to the campsite does have some soft thistles and stinging nettles but we do hope that walkers and dog walkers are a but more adventurous and take themselves and their dogs a bit further afield.
Fire pits that we provide, out of necessity are easily stackable for us to store them when not in use. Better and larger fire pits that we have tried to tend to grow legs and walk. They may scorch the top of the grass but as soon as it is mown again it hardly shows so we are not too concerned about it.

Very friendly greeting and the facilities looked like they were well attended, never looked like they had been left for too long.
I hope to visit again next year.

Local attractions

If you’ve ever considered making your own beer at home, you might want to take a tour of Shepherd Neame (15 minutes’ drive), Britain’s oldest brewery. You’ll learn all about the ingredients needed to craft a fine beer, from water to malted barley and hops, and take part in a guided tasting of Kentish ales and lagers. There’s heaps to do for the whole family at Leeds Castle (20 minutes). While the adults swoon over the glamorous 1930s decor in the castle itself, the kids can climb, slide and jump at the adventure playground or get lost (and then, hopefully, found) in the maze. There is also a Go Ape Tree Top Challenge with ziplines and hanging bridges, plus falconry displays. Fancy a day at the seaside? Whitstable (half an hour) has wide pebbly beaches, a working harbour where you can sample freshly shucked oysters, and a promenade for walking and cycling that goes past the Tankerton Slopes (with their colourful beach huts) and all the way to a skate park.
