  • Intimate, peaceful site amongst woodland, orchards and herb gardens
  • Leeds castle 10 minutes' drive; 40 minutes to Kent coast
  • Eco-friendly site with bar area and picnic tables; campfires permitted
To the Kent countryside – and make it quick… About 10 minutes' drive from Harrietsham, Welsummer Camping is a properly rural location – but it's also only a short drive from the M20, making it a particularly fine spot for those seeking an easy escape from London. Frazzled capital-dweller or not, you'll be most welcome at this intimate family-run site where you can relax among woodland, orchards and herb gardens. It’s all about wandering in the woods, soaking up the peaceful atmosphere and spending the evening by the campfire (firewood is sold on site; please don't collect your own in the woods). The owners are keen to preserve the natural environment here, so everything is run on sustainable principles. Water for showers and sinks is heated by a woodburning stove (using locally sourced wood) and you'll be asked to sort your waste and generally respect the setting. Many of the essentials for a comfortable break are provided – the site has picnic tables for your meals and (perhaps more importantly) a bar area serving hot and cold drinks. All in all, this is a lovely setting for a chilled-out break – and a fine base for exploring this part of Kent, too. Walkers can start by following local footpaths to the Greensand Ridge, and then set off to roam around the Kent Downs National Landscape. Leeds Castle is 10 minutes' drive away for a fabulous family day out, and there are plenty more things to do nearby, from gardens and a goat sanctuary to the excellent beaches of the Kent coast.

Local attractions

Close by Leeds Castle is a worthy day out with plenty do do for young and old and regular events for special occasions. The Knights Realm play area will amuse the little ones and Go Ape can be booked to exhilarate the big! The gardens are beautiful and there are plenty of snacks and food available. The local villages have plenty of small shops with country fare for your campfire feasts and pretty boutiques to pass a few hours off site. Bodiam National Trust Castle is another great day out with its stunning castle and moat - but combine it with a steam train ride from Tenterden and finish off with a pub meal on the way back and you've made everyone happy! Cranbrook Union Mill is a proper working mill and despite its tricky opening hours is well worth the trip. Beaches are less than an hour away and in hot weather Camber Sands is a good long days fun. Sea Salter, Whitstable, Margate and Broadstairs are all great seasides and within an hour's drive from Welsummer.
