  • Family-run and dog-friendly sustainable retreat in the Kent Downs
  • A 15-minute drive from Folkestone and 25 minutes from Canterbury
  • Hand-feed alpacas, goats and other animals; pub and shop nearby
Time to channel that adventurous side in the Kent Downs – Hoad Meadow Camping is a family-run, sustainable retreat set in a splendid countryside landscape. Adventurers staying here will have the company of an array of animals including alpacas, goats, pigs and chickens, all of which can be met at hand-feeding sessions. Simple, friendly entertainment is this site’s tune. The family – Dan, Stacey and Eva - very much look forward to meeting their guests (dogs included) and making their stay a splendid time from start to finish. When you’re not relaxing on site, you’ll have plenty of choices for adventures elsewhere too, like trying out watersports or witnessing Dover’s white cliffs (25 minutes’ drive away). This rural retreat isn’t without a place to sink your teeth into a tasty dinner either. There’s a village shop 25 minutes’ walk away, so it should be easy to source all the bits for a barbecue of your own. Just along from the shop is a traditional 18th-century pub too. Down the coast from Dover is the seaside town of Folkestone (15 minutes’ drive), part of a North Downs valley with a harbour, creative quarter, beach and mile-long promenade. Inland is historic Canterbury, 25 minutes’ drive away. And if you're planning onward journeys across the Channel, the Eurotunnel and Dover ferry port are a short drive away.

What customers say

This is a family-friendly campsite with a picturesque setting, a pond, and animals that kids love. Guests appreciate the secure entry, flat pitches, and helpful owners. However, compost toilets are a recurring issue, described as basic to unpleasant. Some mention limited space when busy and occasional shower problems. The pizzeria is a popular hit.

Liked Cute camp site. Lovely to see and hear the animals. My son loved it and wants to go back. The owner seems lovely.

Disliked Close to the main road between canterbury and hawkinge so can be a little loud with the traffic, but didnt impact our stay.

Liked To see some animals

Disliked Sadly you are not allowed to touch or feed them 😞
Smaller than expected (cramped parking)

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We’re glad you enjoyed seeing the animals.

We’re sorry you were disappointed that you couldn’t touch or feed them, but this rule is there for the welfare and safety of both our animals and our guests. We have pigs, alpacas, goats and other animals, and unfortunately we cannot allow every visitor to feed or handle them. Giving animals the wrong food, or too much food, can make them seriously ill, and some animals can also be unpredictable around children.

The parking area is separate from the camping field and is intended to keep vehicles away from the pitches as much as possible. We appreciate it may feel smaller when the campsite is busy.

We want everyone to enjoy seeing the animals, but their welfare and our guests’ safety will always come first

Liked Nice campsite, lovely to see the alpacas, pigs, goats etc etc..

Disliked Shared toilets, there is no place for shared toilets in this day and age...Also NO HOT WATER to either outlets at the wash up are or showers..No wash hand basins for shaving..

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We’re pleased you enjoyed the campsite and seeing the alpacas, pigs, goats and other animals.

We are, however, disappointed by some of the comments made.

Regarding the hot water, you raised the shower temperature with us during your stay and we adjusted it for you at the time. We deliberately do not set the shower water excessively hot because this is a family campsite used by young children, and we have to consider the risk of scalding. The showers do have hot water and the temperature is controlled for safety.

Regarding the toilets, our facilities are individual, enclosed toilet cubicles. They are available for use by all guests. We appreciate that some people may personally prefer separate male and female facilities, but describing individual unisex toilets as having “no place in this day and age” is a matter of personal preference rather than an indication that there is something wrong with the facilities.

We were also particularly disappointed to receive this review given that during your stay a broom belonging to the campsite was taken, and we had to approach you to have it returned.

We are always happy to receive genuine constructive criticism and will act on issues when they are brought to our attention, as we did when you asked about the shower temperature. However, we also feel it is important that reviews give future guests a fair and accurate picture of the facilities and what actually happened during a stay.

Local attractions

Creative, historic, attractive… There are many adjectives that can be given to the city of Canterbury (25 minutes’ drive). Its historic highlights include the grand Canterbury Cathedral, Roman walls and timber houses, and its creative side can be tracked down in the theatres and galleries (and you'll pick up attractiveness just by taking a walk…) Dover (20 minutes) isn’t just about the white cliffs and castle. There are World War II tunnels beneath the castle and gorgeous coastal walks at Samphire Hoe. In Hythe (20 minutes), things are just as historical in the way of attractions, with the resort being home to the largest collection of human skulls and bones in the whole of Britain. What a way to split your day, between bone collections and the splendid beachfront. When you’re not busying yourself with all the different watersports that take place in Folkestone (15 minutes), take time to visit Folkestone East Cliff and Warren Country Park (10 minutes). On these easterly cliffs, there are sandy beaches and a nature reserve to investigate.
