  • Rural glamping site close to the beach at Minnis Bay in northern Kent
  • A 25-minute drive to Dreamland Margate and 10 to Birchington-on-Sea
  • Dog-friendly heated wooden pods with TV and mini-kitchen
With a peaceful position between the sea and open Kent countryside, Beachcomber Glamping is a prime spot to bunk up after forays into the resort towns of Herne Bay or Margate, as well as yomps and bike rides along the Viking Coastal Trail, which circles the Isle of Thanet. Dog-friendly accommodation is in neat wooden pods, complete with pull-out sofas that transform into comfy double beds and the additional option of foam camping beds for kids. To minimise the site’s carbon footprint, bedding and towels are not provided, so please bring your own from home or hire them on site for an extra cost. Mini-kitchen areas are equipped with an all-important kettle for morning cuppas, a toaster and a microwave for simple meals. Electric heating and fans take care of temperature control, and there’s a TV for downtime and any rainy days. A communal shower and loo block is close by at the edge of the camping field. Minnis Bay (15 minutes’ walk) is the local village for a newsagent, fish and chip shop, and there are numerous seaside bars and bistros in Birchington-on-Sea (10 minutes’ drive).

Liked: Fantastic location. 2 minute walk to the beach. Camping pod was very clean and good communication from the camp site.

Disliked: It would have been good to have an electric heater for night time but everything else was perfect.

Local attractions

Looking for an active break? Kitesurfers and sailors can get out onto the waves at Minnis Bay (15 minutes’ walk); if you prefer to explore the Kent coastline on two wheels, join the scenic Viking Coastal Trail (Regional Cycle Network 15) for gentle family-friendly cycling past ancient flint churches and sandy bays. Left your bike at home? No problem – just hire one in Birchington-on-Sea (10 minutes’ drive) and you’re on your way. Kids demanding amusement? The answer may well be Margate (25 minutes), with its wide sandy beach for paddling in the North Sea and generally letting off energy, before tackling the coasters and roller disco at Dreamland or the mini golf course. Any rainy day grumblings will be hopefully forgotten amid the themed challenges at the escape rooms and fiercely fought competitions at the bowling alley. When it comes to some grown-up time, have a peek at the Shell Grotto (25 minutes), a mysterious subterranean folly of uncertain date with 4.6 million shells adorning the curved chalk walls. Equally impressive works of art are to be found at Turner Contemporary (20 minutes), where some of the finest paintings by local boy JMW Turner reside.
