  • Dog-friendly Kent countryside site run by a local farmer
  • A 25-minute walk to The Big Cat Sanctuary; 35 minutes to an aerodrome
  • Fishing pond on site; walk to Headcorn’s pubs, shops and train station
Bring your fishing rods, walking shoes and a bicycle to this field in the Kent countryside, tenderly run and cared for by a local farmer. With its own gorgeous fishing pond, Love Lane Camping is the place to take a step back and take things at a slower pace (fishing rod in hand, if you wish). The relaxing, dog-friendly site is just across the lane from the main farm and the field where the family has farmed sheep and cattle for generations. An easy walk will get you from Love Lane Camping to country pubs, a train station, a big cat sanctuary and even an aerodrome. The local village, Headcorn, is 25 minutes’ walk from the site and has pubs and shops for getting all your supplies (as this is a back to basics site with just a portable toilet, remember to buy some water and snacks). Headcorn train station is just 20 minutes’ walk away too and has links to London and Ashford. Headcorn Aerodrome, 35 minutes walk away, runs pleasure flights for those who are after a thrill. Otherwise, just stroll down to watch the planes and helis come and go. The Big Cat Sanctuary, 25 minutes’ walk away, has big cats such as jaguars, tigers and leopards. It runs guided tours or experiences like hand-feeding for brave folks. If you’ve thought to bring your bicycle, it’ll be especially easy to get about. The site’s local pub, which has been standing since the 1500s and serves food and local ales and lagers, is a 10-minute cycle away, a 35-minute walk or a quick five minutes by car.

Local attractions

Let yourself pretend like you’re living in the 1900s. Leeds Castle (20 minutes’ drive) has preserved the old times the best it can, and it also runs falconry displays and has a miniature golf course for days by the turrets. Developed by the writer Vita Sackville-West, Sissinghurst Castle Garden (15 minutes) has impressive and artistic gardens. One way to acquaint yourself with the local flavours is by tasting the local wine, cider and juices at the Biddenden Vineyards (10 minutes). A self-guided or private tour will provide a peak into the vineyards and wine-making process. With the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty from 20 minutes’ drive and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty from 10 minutes’ drive, there’s plenty of scope for scenic hikes while staying here too. The High Weald AONB has medieval manors and old farms.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: When we arrived we were the only ones on site, and it stayed like that for the 2 nights we were there, it was lovely. The portaloo was clean and had well stocked toilet roll. The setting was beautiful, the day times here are really rewarding, the pond life is busy, with fish keep coming up to the top and would often jump out of the water. You would see and hear toads/frogs jumping on the lilly pads, and dragonflies flying over the pond. Being so close to the aerodrome, we would be entertained all day looking up at the sky, we saw parachuting, walk the wing(someone strapped to the front of an aeroplane standing up) aeroplanes doing stunts and tricks, and even awoke to hot air balloons on the Saturday morning. The evening sunsets are truly beautiful also, was lovely lighting up a campfire, watching the sun go down with a beer in hand and the kids being able to run free around the site.

Disliked: The only thing we did not like so much were the night times here... The train line is close and it prevented me from sleeping all night (kids and partner slept through it though) the road that is close by was a little disturbing but this was only when you'd get an idiot driver rushing past, and it would be a lot quieter come 9pm, no traffic during the night. The night times are extremely cold here so pack warm cosey clothes and bedding! Because the daytimes are so rewarding, we would stay here again but perhaps for just the one night next time.

Liked: Big field with trees around to hide from sun. Lovely pond full of fish. Mostly small fish which is good for kids to learn fishing some decent size carps as well. Planes and parachutes flying above. Nice to look at.

Disliked: No rubbish bin provided.
