  • Off-grid site on a small family farm at Castle Hedingham in Essex
  • Colne Valley Railway five minutes’ drive; Lavenham 25 minutes
  • Dog-friendly with access to footpaths; pub and shop 15 minutes’ walk
Looking for an off-grid adventure in Essex? Wild Camping at Lawrences Farm should see you right. This back-to-basics pop-up site is set on a family farm just outside the pretty village of Castle Hedingham. Accessed via a quiet country lane, the meadow is bordered by trees and hedgerows, and guests can set up anywhere on the 100-metre strip. A 15-minute walk skirting the grounds of Hedingham Castle (do have a look around while you’re there) leads you to the village centre, where you can admire timber-framed houses, drink a pint or two in the traditional village pub and pick up treats for your barbecue from the friendly village shop. The farm is also on the public footpath network, so it could hardly be easier to explore the local area on foot or take your dogs out for a walk. There's a wider range of shops in the neighbouring village of Sible Hedingham (five minutes’ drive) or the market town of Halstead (10 minutes), which also has restaurants and takeaways.

What customers say

This campsite offers a peaceful, back-to-basics experience in a beautiful rural location. Guests frequently praise the tranquility, lovely views including sunflower fields, and the presence of friendly goats and other animals, which are a hit with children. Facilities are generally described as adequate and clean, including washing-up areas with hot water and toilets. Some guests noted that pitch sizes could be small, and one review mentioned insufficient toilet and refuse facilities during a quieter period. A few recent reviews highlight improvements with more plentiful toilets.

Primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked Nice relaxing campsite surrounded by fields and trees. You can park wherever you like which was nice. Lots of porta loos dotted around which was handy and bins too.
Nice play area for kids with a nice bell tent setup for quiet time or reading. Little washing up setup too, also some friendly goats!
Nice bonus was the ‘environmental walk’ on site, meant my two dogs could stretch their legs and enjoy the new smells and surroundings. Also lots of lovely bird song, got woken by an owl!

Disliked Fairly small site, only 4 other families while I was there but could imagine it might feel a bit squished if there were many more!

Primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked We knew that the site was basic but it was a good place to access Suffolk and North Essex. There was 1 other camper there so was very peaceful. The facilities were as advertised. In the main field away from the camp are facilities for washing and a toilet. There was a children's play area too.
On the camp area, which is clearly signposted, there were 2 Portaloo toilets. The one that was nearest to us was very clean with toilet roll and hand sanitiser. We enjoyed the quiet area and completed a walk around the farmland with views of Hedingham Castle. There are several pubs in the village that serve food and a number of local shops. We will return if in the area - it is ideal for a short stay.

Primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked Peace and quiet with lovely views. This is like wild camping but with the benefit of toilets, dish washing facilities and drinking water. Nice flat grass pitches of a decent size. I didn't get to see the goats but that was my fault (hopefully next time!). I would recommend this site to anyone who wants to keep camping simple.

Disliked Nothing for this type of site - don't expect the amenities of big sites.
