  • Well-maintained park within walking distance of ancient Colchester
  • Easy access to London, East Anglia, Suffolk and Essex
  • Three facility blocks: never queue for the toilet or shower
Excellent excellent Essex... an easy hour from London, a comely coastline, and close to East Anglia, Constable Country and the Sussex coast for day trips – it's all very excellent indeed. And then there's Colchester, the ancient town settled by the Romans way back when and full of superb sights, museums and leisure offerings – all very excellent too. If you're visiting Essex for any of the above, a march along to high-quality Colchester Country Park should be an excellent option, as it's within walking distance of Colchester city centre and close to the coasts of Essex and Sussex. Arrange a day trip to London from here or use the park as a base to or from ferry ports: but a day or two in Colchester should surely be had too... The park is set in pretty parkland with roomy pitches and spacious fields. Facilities are plentiful – no queuing here – and include three spotlessly kept amenities blocks with private cubicles and free hot water. There's also a dedicated disabled unit, dishwashing and laundry areas, a large play area and a shop.

Liked Secure gates

Disliked Felt like an industrial estate pitched up outside a warehouse with dumpsters outside to look at and deliveries of bricks and a pile of rubble/stones . A real disappointment for a country park, especially when there appreared to be pitches further along set amongst lines of trees. It seems these are saved for seasonal /permanent residents . Won’t be returning, especially for top dollar pitch fees.

Liked I can't find anything to like

Disliked Road noise from the A12 is horrendous and their is no escaping it anywhere on the site day and all through the night. It's not a country park it was more like an industrial estate ,on entrance to the site their seemed to be a lot of people living in their caravans. No wifi with an excuse in their booklet about them getting some but now judging by other reviews thats been in the booklet for a while and still none. It also says on this site that no commercial vehicles aloud on site and their was. We was on pitch 81 which sits right opposite a big shed that had lorries etc turning up early in the morning and a lot of noise coming and going, so we was trapped between a12 and a big shed with no views of any so called country park ( really feel the name needs changing as it gives the wrong impression) if it wasn't for us loosing money due to not giving refunds we would have left straight away. The barrier which I presume is their for security as we was given a key fob, was up most of the time. The chemical waste is a nightmare to use as it is in a cupboard outside with a high step so trying to empty the toilet and grey waste was a not easy and I can only imagine how difficult it would be for someone older .We definitely wouldn't stay again and would not recommend, if you want peace and quiet and a lovely country park view this isn't it. I was glad it wasn't summer as their would have been no peace, and with a play area right behind with a basket ball net and big football net I can only imagine what it would be like in the summer with balls hitting the caravans. i couldn't rate the service as when we turned up we had a leaflet stuff in our hands with a fob, no name ask etc barrier was already up.

Liked Nice, clean site with good facilities. Friendly welcome on arrival and when leaving. Security gates and barrier are easy to use.
Ideal for local attractions, zoo for example, and most major chain shops are only a short drive for fuel, food and those bits that we forget to pack. A number of pubs in the area do meals.

Disliked Can be a bit noisy from the road nearby but site itself is well behaved.

Liked Friendly site .. staff were excellent gave us chocolate bars on arrival as we’d been sat in traffic on the A12!
Toilet facilities / washing up facilities warm and super clean!
Upkeep of site was immaculate!

Disliked Yes there is noise from the A12.. but we still managed to sit outside for breakfast on Sunday morning and it didn’t bother us.
We’re on O2 phone network and we had very little signal, quite nice to digital detox , but could be a challenge if you’re planning a ‘home office’ day from there!

Liked We loved the site, we were met at the gate by the owner and had the wonderful facilities explained. The plots are large and only 6 on the site, coupled with being adult only, this lead to a lovely, peaceful weekend. The facilities were spotless and well maintained. When you leave the camp, Rye, Hastings and Tenterden are close by, wonderful. Our new home from home.

Local attractions

Classic Colchester is a popular pick for holidaymakers in the area, who come to see Colchester Castle and Castle Museum with its extensive exhibit on Roman Colchester; the social history Hollytrees Museum and the Natural History Museum in the city's former All Saints' Church. Plenty of restaurants, pubs and shops are here too, as well as decent leisure options like a leisure centre, ten-pin bowling, roller skating, the Mercury Theatre, the Arts Centre and the Minories Gallery. If you're on holiday with kids, Colchester Zoo is always a hit, as is the East Anglian Railway Museum at Chappel which has heaps of activities for young explorers. The Colne Valley Railway's mile of track is at the old village of Castle Hedingham, also well worth a look for its Norman Hedingham Castle and timber-framed medieval buildings. The area surrounding Colchester Country Park is excellent walking, cycling and nature spotting land with miles of nature reserves, footpaths and bike trails: head from Colchester to Alresford a mile and a half away or join up with the 81-mile long Essex Way from Epping to Harwich.
