General

  • Direct access to seven miles of beach on the Essex coast
  • Indoor and outdoor swimming pool, sports court and kids' club
  • Lively restaurant and bar with takeaway and entertainment

An early morning constitutional along the sands, a pre-lunch paddle and castle construction contest, or a romantic sunset stroll beside the waves – with the beach this close, you’ll have no problem fitting in all three.

Beach buffs will be in their Essex coast element at Martello Beach Holiday Park, as it's got direct access to seven miles of broad golden sands, meaning you can just nip over for a dose of sea and sand as your mood (or the weather…) dictates. In between trips to the beach, there's plenty of fun to be had on site: the park's got swimming pools indoor and out, a sports court, kids’ clubs, and a multizone adventure playground.

Fine days here can be celebrated with the lighting of a barbecue should you wish (supermarkets are a 10-minute drive away in Clacton-on-Sea); easier eats can be had at the site's restaurant where you can either settle in at a table or have them pack up bits to take away. However you elect to dine, make sure you're done in time to head to the East Beach Showbar for drinks and the free live shows, competitions and games that are laid on in the busier months.

The gentleman the cleaned the showers and toilets in the campsite block did a good job and was very nice.

    Disliked:

Where to begin, would not recommend this site for people who just want to use a tent! Despite asking for hot water to be turned on there was none, only the last day for washing up. The warmest thing was the hair dryer in the shower room! We were told on a map where to pitch our tent and it was circled by member of reception staff. We checked in at 12.40 and at 3.25 when everything was set up a smiling face from the office came over and told us we would have to move our tent 150 yds to another pitch because of construction being imment. No construction took place the 5 days we were there ! We ask to see the manager several times ....she was always moving heavy equipment🙄The place shabby, rundown, staff don't know what there doing. Not fit for purpose.

We had to end our weeks holiday after 4 days due to bad weather and wasnt helped by staff as they quoted we dont give away free accommodation. I wasmt asking for free accommodation but at least a discounted price after i had paid £286 to stay on a pitch which for the first 2 days had no hot water!
I will not be going back there any time soon!

Covid safety measures appalling! Sanitising stations mostly empty, no one wearing face coverings across whole park including indoor areas such as arcades. No challenge to anyone without face coverings or not adhering to social distancing. Overcrowded indoor areas. No staff in any ppe. One screen at till point on bar, but staff using other tills without screen. Never saw any cleaning taking place on tables or touch points in bars/restaurant/arcades. Got laughed at by staff for wearing face covering in the shop, despite it being law. Couldn’t use swimming pool as it was fully booked and we were informed we had to queue for about an hour outside at 8am, to book for the next day to get a slot.

    Leaving

    Disliked:

Left after just one night. Everything about the place is shambolic: no soap or toilet roll in the toilets. No hot water to speak of at all.
Tent pitches were a joke. Self-allocation meant that even those who didn't book an electrical hookup took up spaces around those hookups.

Also not sure why I was asked on PitchUp to make sure my tent was within a permitted size, when there were 'tents' there the size of houses.

Social distancing? Don't be silly. Covid19 is just a hoax to the people running this place. Sure, they'll put up the signs saying you MUST wear a mask to enter the shop there, but then allow everyone to walk in without one and then bunch up while queuing. The invasion of personal space wouldn't have been acceptable before the pandemic...
The 'restaurant' couldn't handle the number of people ordering dinner (reinforcing my belief that the place was overbooked) so it closed in order to get through the backlog.

Local attractions

Fancy a day out? Make nearby Clacton-on-Sea (10 minutes' drive) your first port of call, for the Victorian pier crammed with dodgems, amusements and fairground rides, another great sandy beach, pretty seafront gardens, and plenty of places to grab some fish and chips.

Another place that’s well worth a trip is Colchester (half an hour): Britain's oldest recorded town is littered with Roman remains to wander around, and it's also got a Norman castle and the fab Firstsite contemporary art gallery to peruse. The town's excellent zoo is a must for those who've brought the bairns on a break, and there's also a trampoline park, roller rink and adventure golf centre to help them burn off any excess energy.

Those seeking something a little less energetic may like to take a wander through the Beth Chatto Gardens (25 minutes), Hamford Water National Nature Reserve (half an hour) or the Essex Wildlife Trust's bird and butterfly sanctuary at Fingringhoe Wick (45 minutes).

Must see

  • firstsite (11.5 miles)
  • Colchester Castle Museum (11.6 miles)
  • Colchester Zoo (12.8 miles)
