  • Family-run site with 19 acres of space; pub 15 minutes' walk away
‘Basic wild camping at its best’ say the owners of Mill Barn Camping and Caravanning, a couple of miles from Etchingham in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. And you can certainly see where they’re coming from with that statement: this family-run site is set in a splendid 19 acres of open fields, overlooking some of the finest views East Sussex has to offer. Among all that acreage there’s plenty of space for everyone to spread out a little bit, and you’re welcome to pick whichever plot they like (in line with the site’s own guidance, of course). Four-legged friends are allowed to join you here too, and there’s a small track around the edge of the fields where they can have a proper leg-stretching run about. It's all pretty minimal on the facilities front here (you’ll note there are no toilets or showers) but if you’re after a back-to-nature vibe it’s quite the spot. Campfires and barbecues are allowed (and at their finest with a colourful sunset background) or you can stroll to the local pub in about 15 minutes. A rural spot this may be, but it’s also a very accessible one – having the A21 less than half a mile away means that getting out for day trips should be pretty straightforward. Walks, fishing, castles and country estates are all nearby, or you can hit the beach in Hastings with a drive of 20 minutes or so.

Local attractions

The High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a hive of great corners to get out for a walk or a bike ride – there’s a somewhat mind-boggling 2,395 kilometres of byway, bridleway and footpath around here, so your main problem’s likely to be where to go first. If you prefer your country pursuits to involve sitting down, head to Hawkhurst Fish Farm (five minutes’ drive). A short drive away are the likes of Pashley Manor Gardens (five minutes), Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (10 minutes) or Great Dixter House & Gardens (15 minutes). Seaside strolls, meanwhile, could take you around Hastings (20 minutes), past the art deco De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea (25 minutes) or through the sand dunes at Camber Sands (half an hour). And if you’d like to throw in a little history while you’re here, take a circuit of local castles Bodiam (five minutes’ drive, or bike it in 20 minutes), Scotney (15 minutes) and Herstmonceux (25 minutes) or go back to 1066 at the Battle of Hastings site in Battle (10 minutes).
