The gateway to another world

  • Herstmonceux pub site alongside the 1066 Country Walk
  • Varied food menu made emphasising fresh local produce
  • Secluded setting; campfires allowed
The Bull’s Head… that doesn’t sound like a campsite, does it? In fact, it sounds more like a… pub. But, happily for those who like to combine their beers with their breaks using the least effort possible, the Bull’s Head is both. Based in East Sussex at Herstmonceux (try saying that after a couple of pints), this site is both more secluded and quiet than you’d expect for being next to an imbibing emporium, and is listed as family-friendly. Which you might think is really rather an excellent combination… Facilities at the site include a modern toilet block and a water standpipe, and there’s no problem with cooking under the stars either as campfires are allowed in the pitching field. For guests who’d rather get someone else to dish up their meal, plenty of food (using mostly local produce) can be had in the pub, although tables for meals are best off being booked in advance after confirming your stay and are otherwise subject to availability. The pub is open between 12pm and 10pm on Monday to Thursday, staying open an hour later on Friday and Saturday and closing early on Sundays at 7pm. Grab lunch every day between 12pm and 2pm (or until 3pm on Sundays) and dinner every day but Sunday from 6pm to 8pm. There are also light bites available from 2.30pm to 6pm. Bulls Head Shack is also open on weekends from 8am to 12.30 am, and serves hot drinks, cold drinks and bacon and sausage baps (or a veggie alternative).

What customers say

This is a friendly, relaxed campsite with great pub food and welcoming staff. Guests loved the spacious, quiet location, clean facilities, and fire pit option. Amenities are basic but well-maintained. It's close to local attractions and walking paths. Minor issues include occasional facility queues and a desire for electric hook-up.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Beautiful location, all necessary facilities, quiet and spacious. Lovely pub with superb food, welcoming staff and friendly atmosphere, family friendly. Really enjoyed our stay.

Disliked Nothing. Only marks down is that there is no kids play area but it’s not detrimental to the overall experience and there were kids games available in the pub when we were having breakfast. We’re looking forward to coming back!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The pub was great, the welcome when I checked in was fab. The campsite itself was peaceful and had a good location. The site was mainly flat. There were 2 washing up sinks, 2 toilets and 3 showers, all were kept clean and tidy. Staff at pub were very attentive and friendly.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Loved the space and relaxed setting! Shower and toilet facilities were fine! Access to water and washing up spot on and easy to dispose of rubbish! We did t use a fire pit but love the idea of them being available for next time! Kids loved being able to run around and ride their bikes on the field and the. Dogs loved all the smells and freedom too!

Pub was brilliant! Great relaxed pub garden. Very friendly staff and the kids loved the chocolate brownies and ice cream!

My little boy hurt his knee on the property a couple days before we stayed and all the staff were very helpful especially Anna. So would like to thank you all for being so kind! We are only local so will be staying on the site and using the pub a lot more! Looking forward to coming again. Thank you!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Super friendly, the staff were amazing and couldn’t do enough to help. Very relaxed. Great that campfires are allowed, and it’s very laid back. The food at the pub was great, and the coffee/breakfast shack was really good in the morning!
Great beaches a short drive away
Loads of footpaths nearby if you fancy a walk/run.
Herstmonceux castle and science centre super close too.

Disliked The shower wasn’t great… But I’m really fussy! Thankfully it was a really hot night when we stayed so it wasn’t an issue. It was perfectly functional, just not top notch!
Also no shop on site, just worth bearing in mind to make sure you have everything you need before you get there!

Local attractions

With something called the 1066 Country Walk running past the site, it’s not a huge stretch to guess that this is battlefield country… The 1066 Battle Abbey and Battlefield site is nearby to relive that all-important day in English history when King Harold (allegedly) got something in his eye, while there are other battle-y relics in neighbouring Hastings which also has Europe's biggest beachside fishing fleet and smuggling adventures at St Clements Caves. The 1066 route is just one of the many scenic walks in the surrounding countryside, or for day trips, Herstmonceux is recommended with its castle and the rural Herstmonceux Observatory Science Centre. As well as walking, Sussex sightseers can take the Kent and East Sussex Railway to puff along from Tenterden through the countryside of the Rother Valley to Bodiam with its National Trust castle, or stay closer to home with a trip up (or down) Hastings’s cliff railway which has the UK's steepest funicular railway. Hang on tight… For less adrenaline-fuelled sightseeing, options include a stroll along the nearby beaches – the seaside is just a short drive away – or a dander around Darwell Reservoir, surrounded by ancient woodland and the chance to spot woodpeckers and tawny owls. Meanwhile, mini battlers will be more than happy with the abundance of attractions in the area aimed at the little people, from the Blue Reef Aquarium at Hastings to getting bug-eyed at the birds of prey at Hailsham’s Knockhatch Adventure Park.
