Camp within freshly cut meadows at a coastal working farm

  • Simple pop-up pitches at an East Sussex coastal farm
  • A 15-minute drive to Hastings or Rye; Camber Sands 25 mins
  • Pett Level beach 10 minutes' walk; farm shop next door
Get set for long, lazy summer days near the sea – once the hay has been harvested, the folk at Pett Camping open up their meadows for guests to come along and spend some time hanging out in the East Sussex countryside. The peaceful pitches here are in the grazed flowering meadows owned by Lunsford Farm – which also has a farm shop a couple of minutes’ walk away from the site selling all sorts of tasty treats including lamb burgers, apple juice, honey and eggs. Meanwhile, if your rural break isn’t complete without a pint in a country pub, you’ll be pleased to hear it’s only a five-minute walk to the village of Pett and its pub (and also its tea shop and play park). The wider area is just as fabulous for visitors – the site is within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (so plenty of walks, bike rides and general scenery-viewing to be done) and about 10 minutes’ walk from Pett Level beach, a sandy/pebbly stretch with a fossil forest that appears at low tide (with a beachfront restaurant and a weekend food truck as well). Once you’ve explored your immediate surroundings, there’s plenty more around – including beach days, vineyard tours or days wandering around Rye or Hastings. Back at base, it’s all very laidback – guests are allowed to pick their own pitch and light campfires or barbecues (but don’t bring dogs, please, as there’s livestock around). The facilities stretch to just compost toilets so please note there are no showers.

What customers say

Peaceful, basic site with rural views. Loved for its spaciousness, friendly owners, and proximity to pub/beach. Limited facilities (one compost toilet, no showers) are a trade-off for value/location, fine for short stays. Adding a second toilet suggested.

Liked Lovely quiet place to camp , Beautiful scenery. Caroline is lovely and welcoming and we were able to purchase fire wood from her. Very clean and just how it’s advertised.. would definitely stay here again! Beach is a short walk down the road which was an added bonus!

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Lovely site with gorgeous views. The field is very sloping and at peak times you would be hard pushed to find a level pitch. Many lovely walks from site - the Jubilee trail is one and there are dozens of other East Sussex footpaths - and the pub is 5 mins away. The beach is 10 mins away down a very very steep hill (hard work coming back up!) I couldn’t find a non road route. There are no shops around and nothing at the beach midweek anymore which would have been handy to know. The farm shop has quite a few supplies as stated. The compost toilets (one in each field) were spotless and very well stocked.
The site is peaceful with lovely views and a walkers paradise.

Disliked The inconsiderate tw6t that ran their car engine constantly all evening long on Monday night. Probably charging their brat offspring’s iPad…..

From the manager: Thank you for the 8/10 review!
Sorry, I didn't realise the lock was broken until you mentioned it in this review. I am getting it fixed today, thanks for raising it. I have bags of logs in my car, ready for anyone that asks. I don't advertise logs in case the farmer hasn't got any ready, it depends on his workload.
Warm wishes,
Caroline

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Location, Caroline was super welcoming and friendly,

Disliked Toilet closest to the farm - the lock isn’t finished, you cant shut the door, you could fix this quite easily or provide some way to lock the door.
Also you dont provide a scoop for sawdust or a sanitary bin.

No bins in general

Sorry, I didn't realise the lock was broken until you mentioned it in this review. I am getting it fixed today, thanks for raising it. The bins are at the farm, 200m away, to keep them out of sight. I try to remember to tell people, sorry.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We had a fantastic weekend at Pett Camping. Caroline is a super friendly host and gave us plenty of tips for the local area. We stayed 3 nights and enjoyed it so much. There was a new compost loo in our field which was very clean, well stocked and even had a small library inside! Short 20min walk through fields to Pett Level beach and the local pub is a 5 min walk away. Closest supermarket is an Aldi <10mins away on the outskirts of Hastings.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked This is a basic campsite but we knew that and weren’t expecting any more. The views are fantastic - you can see down to the sea, apparently it’s walkable although we didn’t try, there’s a map in the toilets. There were some lovely sheep in the field next to us and plenty of space for the kids to run about without disturbing anyone else (I hope anyway!) we only stayed one night but it was easy and peaceful.

Disliked It’s not all that flat, but it wasn’t too busy (on the last weekend of summer holidays, so probably doesn’t get all that much busier) so we were able to find a flat area to pitch up without much trouble.

Local attractions

It’s not a well-known tourist attraction, but the village of Pett has much to offer for visitors – it’s the kind of place where you can still watch cricket on summer weekend afternoons, stop by at the pub for a pint of local ale and/or join in with various activities in the village hall (a yoga class, perhaps, or something for the kids). Once you’ve spent some time at Pett Level beach (10 minutes’ walk), perhaps you’d like to get a little further along the coastline to the fossil hunting hotspot Fairlight Cove (20 minutes’ drive) or the stunning sand dunes of Camber Sands (25 minutes). Hastings (15 minutes) is another good option, with a historic tinge, and Rye (15 minutes) has a whole lot of antique shops as well as a harbourside nature reserve with bike hire available. If the kids demand a bit more action, try Knockhatch Adventure Park (45 minutes) – or take them to see the cute animals at the South of England Rare Breeds Centre (half an hour). Port Lympne Safari Park (45 minutes) is the place if they’re after bigger beast spottings.
