  • Peaceful Lancashire site with far-reaching views over Pendle Hill
  • A 10-minute drive from Colne and half an hour from Skipton
  • Next to a recreation ground; 10 minutes' walk from a café and pub
Tucked in on the edge of Trawden village, Pendle Prospects Wild Camping is a back to basics site with prize panoramas over that self-same hill. Set close to the Yorkshire-Lancashire border, here you'll be surrounded by a peaceful backdrop of trees, wild-style fields and rugged dry stone walls. While staying at Pendle Prospects Wild Camping, suitably booted walkers can tackle some or all of the 45-mile Pendle Way, a waymarked circular route that passes through Wycoller, the next village over (a half-hour walk away). While you're there, catch your breath in Wycoller Country Park, or march on into Yorkshire via the bookish Brontë Way. As its name suggests, this rural site is light on facilities, but there are basics like a portable toilet on hand. The amenities of Trawden, though, are splendidly simple to access, with an excellent community shop, an independent café and a pub 10 minutes' stroll down the hill (consider stopping for a tipple at the latter if you might need a little help getting back up it). There's also a recreation ground next to the site if you're up for a kickabout. Pendle Prospects Wild Camping is open to dogs, but please keep them on leads while on the park. The nearest supermarkets can be found in Colne (10 minutes’ drive); pick up bits here for a barbecue or campfire evening back at base but please note that blazes are only allowed in raised firepits and not on the ground. When you arrive on site, expect a welcome text. There is no reception on site, so set up camp and the staff will see you later.

Local attractions

Sally out to Skipton (half an hour's drive) and its Norman castle, a Royalist stronghold in the English Civil War with an intriguing shell grotto. After history-tinged times surveying the castle keep, jump aboard a narrowboat in the town centre and take a cruise on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. (Afternoon tea cruises run between March and October if you feel like something fancy.) Both the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland can be reached within about half an hour; Pendle Hill is a similar distance away. With centuries-old connections to witchcraft, the hill is a must for fans of all things occult – drop by the Pendle Heritage Centre (20 minutes) to learn more about what really went down at the famous witch trials of 1612. Kids not sufficiently spooked? Drive out to the coast and take them for a spin on the white-knuckle rides at Blackpool Pleasure Beach (an hour) instead. On the other side of town, Blackpool Zoo is home to some chilled-out animals that can help you calm down after all that adrenaline; Blackpool Model Village (arguably even more sedate) is just over the road in splendid Stanley Park.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked: The views were amazing and it was very quiet and peaceful. It was just a short walk into the village and the pub in the village was really great. There was a live band on and the food was good. There were lots of lovely walks around the place.

Disliked: there were no water taps so we ended up going to the village shop to buy small bottles of water to fill the kettle. The toilets were also very smelly.
