  • Wild camping with fell views on the Wainwright Coast to Coast Walk
  • Access to the Howgill Fells; half an hour’s drive to Cautley Spout
  • Pop-up site on a working sheep farm, with cooking facilities in a barn
Whether you’re hiking the Wainwright Coast to Coast Walk or looking to hang around and explore the western fells in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Sunbiggin Farm Camping is a truly remote spot at which to pitch your tent. This pop-up wild camping site near Orton in the Eden Valley is just as it’s meant to be – few facilities and an immersion in glorious, untamed Howgills fell country. The camping pitches are at Sunbiggin café and rest point on the CTC, and close to the Walney to Wear and Whitby Cycle Route too. Camping pitches are in an enclosed garden sheltered by dry stone walls, with stunning fells as a backdrop, or in an area nicknamed Tommy’s Garth with uninterrupted views over the fells. The campsite is on a working farm, so expect to hear animal noises early in the morning and country smells throughout the day, and be prepared for fresh mornings and unpredictable Cumbrian weather. There is outside seating aplenty and gas barbecues for cooking on warmer days, and when the weather is not playing, a warm barn equipped with microwave and fridge is there as a space for you to cook and relax in the evenings. You can warm up with tea and coffee too and pay via the honesty box in the barn.
By prior arrangement, the owners offer lifts to the local pub in Orton (10 minutes’ drive) as well as barbecue packs and breakfast goodies.

Local attractions

From Sunbiggin, campers with cars have easy access to gorgeous spots like Cautley Spout waterfall in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Ullswater (both half an hour’s drive) in the Lake District National Park and remote High Force Waterfall (an hour) in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If you’re on foot and prefer to stay closer to home base, there are plenty of walks leading straight from the site out onto the Howgill Fells (straight from site) to the limestone pavements in Great Asby Scar National Nature Reserve (five minutes’ walk). Cyclists can ride to Smardale Gill Viaduct (55 minutes’ ride) to admire its 14 mighty stone arches, and Gamelands Stone Circle (10 minutes) to see the little-known prehistoric standing stones – now mostly fallen. The local village of Orton (10 minutes’ drive) offers up a monthly farmers’ market (every second Saturday) and tasting sessions at Kennedys Fine Chocolates. Weather not good? Head for Shap (20 minutes) to do a few laps in the heated indoor pool.
