  • Spacious, friendly site on the Cumbrian coast
  • Fell walks, Lakes Coniston and Windermere within 45 minutes' drive
  • A few minutes from pubs, chip shop, dog-friendly beach and watersports
How’s this for having your cake and eating it? Harbour Lights Campsite is a couple of minutes’ walk from Haverigg beach on the Cumbrian coast – and behind it, with trails beginning 15 minutes' drive away, the famed hills and fells of the Lake District (not to mention those lakes themselves). No more tough choices, have the lot here. If you have any problems on this Cumbrian cracker of a site, it’ll be deciding what to do first. You could start by taking in the view: sunsets over the beach and sea with the hills looming in the background; on this friendly, well-kept but unfussy site there’s little to get in between you and the grand surroundings. Don’t fancy missing a minute in the open air? No problem, barbecues and firepits are all to hand. Dogs are welcome on site, on the beach next door and in many of the nearby pubs. On that note, there are places to sip and sup in Haverigg, and more of the same plus supermarkets in Millom, both about five minutes' drive away.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: No one around to show us what was what but we soon figured it all out for ourselves and had a pretty decent stay. Showers were nice and warm any time if the day, a cold option would have been good considering the weather but you can't have everything. 5 minutes walk to a beach of sorts, not the nicest but somewhere to walk the dog, a further 5 minutes to a londis. All in all it was a decent camp site, I'd definitely go back again.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Facilities were exceptionally clean and well looked after.
Plenty of space, location is quiet, nice sea front walks with a large dog friendly beach - good chippy a mile away if you run out of gas as we did!
We arrived late, check in left a note and instructions which were easy to follow.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Everything. The staff were all really friendly. Facilities were heated and very clean. There is a fish and chip shop in the nearby village (within walking distance) which was really good, as was the food at the Ski Bar which is adjacent to the site. Lovely ice cream available on site as well.

Disliked: No WiFi - wasn't too much of a problem for us but might be for some.

Local attractions

Haverigg’s wide sandy beach is fab for walks, castle building and kite-based antics, from flying them to being hauled along the sands in buggies at high speed. If you’re after activities on the water, Port Haverigg Wakepark five minutes’ drive away has something wet and wild for everyone. Without straying too far, you can also go horse trekking through the countryside and galloping on the beach from Murthwaite Green trekking centre, or get your kicks with wheels and mud included at Haverigg Motocross Track (both 10 minutes). For walks with wildlife, it’s five minutes to RSPB Hodbarrow, where hosts of rare birds and plants thrive in the distinctive wetland environment. If you want to get higher, Black Combe is officially England’s biggest hill, 30 feet short of being a mountain and accessible by trails starting about 15 minutes' drive away in Wicham. Walks up the famed Old Man and surrounding fells start in Coniston, 40 minutes away. For lakes, well, take your pick… Windermere is 45 minutes away, for boat cruises, steamer trips and watersports as well as lakeside walks and cycling. Families make for Muncaster Castle (half an hour), on account of its Harry Potter-like appearance, resident ghost, adventure trails and playground and its Hawk and Owl centre with regular feeding and flying shows. For even wilder wildlife, the South Lakes Safari Zoo is 40 minutes away or you can Go Ape yourselves at Grizedale, zipping through the forest treetops on wires and ropeways (50 minutes).
