General

  • Back to basics site in the Lake District National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Ambleside; Grasmere an hour's walk
  • Within half a mile of local pubs, the village shop and a river

Chapel Stile is a quiet, back to basics campsite in the Lake District National Park. Located at the gateway to the spectacular Langdale Valley and with views over some of the Lakes' most impressive mountains, this simple spot is also within half a mile of handy village amenities including local pubs, a café and an independent grocery shop.

The site's facilities are basic: fresh water is on tap, but in terms of toilets there are just portaloos, and no showers are available. Access by car to the site is simple, and there's also a bus stop a couple of minutes' walk from base. That said, all of the surrounding area's footpaths may well encourage you to leave the car at home and set out instead on trails like the Grasmere Waterfall Walkways. Once that’s ticked off, you could also venture out on foot to Langdale Pikes, Stickle Tarn, Little Langdale and Great Langdale.

There are some truly impressive views both on and off site here. Please help keep it this way by taking all your litter home with you.

Not having a shower facility wasn't great, so washed myself in the river down the road which was lovely but not quite the same.

  • Liked:

*Decent location - 30 min walking distance to start of nearby hikes, directly across the street from the local pub, right next to the local shop, 20-30 minute drive to nearby lake villages.
    *Port-a-potties were clean and modern.
*Very friendly greeter to check you in and on-site to help if you have any questions.

    Disliked:

*Nowhere to throw away your own rubbish, have to take it with you. For the nightly fee would be reasonable to get to throw your rubbish away somewhere on site.
*Would be great to have a dish washing facility, but there's just a single drinking water hose.
*A real bathroom would be nice, but the port-a-potties were kept clean.
*Grass in field could be kept shorter. It was left rather high and, when wet, get your feet completely soaked after a walk from your tent to the water or port-a-potty.
