  • Well-equipped shepherd’s hut a 20-minute drive from Bassenthwaite Lake
  • Cockermouth 25 minutes’ drive; Solway Firth half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; ensuite toilet and rain shower; outdoor seating
The lush Cumbrian countryside is the backdrop for Clea Hall Farm, a blissfully remote spot on the northern fringes of Lake District National Park (it’s a 20-minute drive to Bassenthwaite Lake). It is here that dog-loving couple Charlotte and Alex run a cosy shepherd’s hut: Herdie Hideaway. (As dog lovers themselves, they will be more than glad to welcome your four-legged companion, too.) Amenities abound within the hut, starting with a plush real bed (with an overhead light and nearby power points, so you can charge your phone overnight; bed linen and towels are also provided), and continuing with a well-equipped kitchen featuring fridge freezer, gas hob, microwave, toaster and kettle. A complimentary basket of tea, coffee and biscuits means you can have a restoring cuppa while you settle in. There’s also an ensuite toilet and a rain shower (with reliable hot water, plus a heated towel rail – happy days). Step outside the hut, and your happiness should continue, with woodland all around and spectacular views as far as the Solway Firth, plus an alfresco seating area complete with firepit and barbecue. Speaking of which, before hitting the supermarkets, it’s worth asking Charlotte and Alex what they have in terms of local produce to sell you – it might well be all you need for a home-cooked meal. For anything else you need, there are shops (and dining options, too) in Wigton (10 minutes), in addition to a couple of pubs within a five-minute drive (about one hour’s walk).

Local attractions

National Trust - Wordsworth House and Garden, in the market town of Cockermouth (25 minutes’ drive), is the birthplace of the 18th-century poet. The walled garden of this Georgian property, which stretches to the River Derwent, is a riot of colourful wildflowers, fragrant herbs and fruit trees. The medieval castle in Carlisle (half an hour) includes the tower where Mary, Queen of Scots, was held prisoner in the 16th century; also intriguing is a series of stone carvings said to be the work of prison guards with too much time on their hands… Ducks and swans swim on Hammond’s Pond, on the outskirts of town, where there’s also a playground. The mudflats of the Solway Firth (half an hour) are a magnet for birdwatchers, who might spot dunlins, curlews and peregrine falcons. There is more wildlife in the sand dunes at Mawbray Banks; also, if you happen to be here at low tide, see if you can catch a glimpse of the submerged forest, thought to date back to 6000 BC.
