The camping field

  • Quiet pop-up site with grass pitches 20 minutes’ drive from Windermere
  • One mile from Ulverston; 10 minutes’ drive from a beach and safari zoo
  • Spacious, dog-friendly pick-your-own pitches; pub five minutes’ walk
What a tempting prospect: unwinding on quiet pick-your-own grass pitches five minutes’ walk from a pub and just 20 minutes’ drive away from Windermere Lake on the edge of the Lake District National Park. This short summary belongs to Rufus Lane Campsite, a pop-up site which very kindly welcomes dogs and is also rather conveniently positioned just a mile away from the market town of Ulverston. To set the scene, Rufus Lane Campsite is a camping field on a family-run smallholding with lush grass and the convenience of supermarkets, a popular drive-through and a well-known coffee brand within five minutes’ drive. There’s a single portable toilet and a washing-up facility with running water (note that there’s no drinking water, though, as it’s just suitable for washing up), along with plenty of room for kids to play. The wider landscape is full of yet more welcome temptations. For one, the edge of Windermere is just 20 minutes’ drive away and the Coniston boat centre is 35 minutes’ drive away. Two, it’s just a 10-minute car ride to Bardsea’s beach, stone circle and golf course too. And if you’re not already enthralled by the idea of seeing the Lake District and the splendid Cumbria coast are just lovely, there are also attractions like the South Lakes Safari Zoo (10 minutes’ drive) and the seven-acre Cumbrian Cow Maize Maze (five minutes) within striking distance.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Quiet - because it was almost completely empty.

Disliked Overpriced despite complete lack of facilities.

Very little flat space - not a problem for me as I could pick anyone the flat bit at the bottom of the slope as it was so quiet.

Only one festival style portable chemical toilet. No running water. No mobile signal, although this seemed to be the case in thd town too.

Walked to Local pub to find they don't do food on Sunday evenings. Found a good chip shop in town about 25 mins walk from the site. Nothing much else any closer.

As description makes clear this is a peaceful no frills campsite. Plenty…

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked As description makes clear this is a peaceful no frills campsite. Plenty of space when I visited. A lot of the site slopes but there is a large flat area also. The portaloo was clean, the washing up area under a lean-to perfectly serviceable (cold water). I was surprised you have to bring drinking water, but no problem at all. A couple of shelves by washing up had bottled water, firewood and firelighters, all at reasonable prices. Help yourself to fire pits- there seemed to be 4 or 5 available when I stayed. 20mins stroll to M&S/Aldi etc, 10mins up a lovely footpath to locals pub (no food when I was there). Site owner very friendly and helpful. I had to move my booking around and he was very pleasant and helpful about it. Thanks!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked If you love open fields, quiet rural camp with clean basic fascilities. This is the place for you. Short drive to Ulverston. Good view of surrounding hills where you can watch the thunderstorms roll in from the Irish sea.
Slight drawback is its wet sodden ground the way out is uphill and the track can be slippy. Pick your camp spot wisely. Enjoy

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked The campsite was lovely, really quiet and peaceful with lots of room within pitches and surrounding areas. Facilities were really useful with washing up liquid, cloths, sponges provided. The small shop of items such as fresh eggs, firewood, firelighters, water and food to feed the animals was a thoughtful touch. Owners were really welcoming and friendly and we will definitely be back to this site. We have really enjoyed our stay here.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked 10 minutes walk into the centre of Ulverston, pubs, Laurel & Hardy Museum, shops etc. The owner called me to check if everything was OK and provided directions.

Disliked Zero facilities. DO NOT BOOK MORE THAN ONE NIGHT!!! Rufus Lane is way overpriced. This place is beyond basic - we're talking about a field here. With sheep!

From the manager: We are sorry our “pop-up” site didn’t deliver to your expectations, but we don’t advertise our site as anything other than a “pop-up” site on our working farmland. As for your comment regarding “zero facilities”, We provide all the essential amenities needed for a pleasant stay i.e. toilet, washing up facilities and small honesty hut.
We feel the campsite doesn’t warrant the really low scores you gave.

Local attractions

Time to fit in a museum run? There’s plenty of choice around these parts, between the Laurel & Hardy Museum (five minutes’ drive), The Dock Museum (15 minutes) on Barrow-on-Furness’ shipbuilding history and the Lakeland Motor Museum (15 minutes). There are historic sites too: Furness Abbey (15 minutes), for example, or Stott Park Bobbin Mill (25 minutes) used by the weavers and spinners of the Lake District in the 18th century. Test the transport of older days on the heritage Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (15 minutes) too. If you’re keen to scope out the finest local trails, there are a few places where you might strike gold, especially the Sandscale Haws National Nature Reserve (15 minutes) with distant fell views or Grizedale Forest (half an hour) – and note that this latter option also has a Go Ape trail. For more tremendous times, make your way to the Lakes Aquarium (25 minutes, and if you’ve got time for a trip a little further afield, perhaps Muncaster Castle (50 minutes), the Ravenglass & Eskdale Steam Railway (50 minutes) or the Ullswater 'Steamers’ (an hour and five minutes) too?
