Spacious level field

  • Pop-up wild camping site at an Eden Valley livery yard
  • A 15-minute drive to Penrith or Ullswater; Whinfell Forest 10 minutes
  • Spacious sheltered pitches with horses and hens for neighbours
With the Lake District National Park on one side and the North Pennines National Landscape on the other, Croft House Camping is in a fabulous spot for getting out to explore the Cumbria countryside. Mind you, the pop-up camping field here has its own lovely views over the Eden Valley too, so you don’t have to be out and about to soak up the scenery. Just outside the tiny rural village of Cliburn, this is a peaceful and dog-friendly rural site that’s part of a livery yard. There are only a handful of pitches here, so you may well find that the resident horses and hens are your closest neighbours. The pitches are level and sheltered by dry stone walls, with easy access for vehicles. They’re spacious, too, so you’ll be able to get an awning or gazebo set up and have space for a barbecue and a couple of camping chairs. As a simple pop-up site, facilities here are pretty minimal, but you’ll have access to water and a chemical disposal point as well as a toilet on the livery yard (bring a torch for nocturnal wanderings; it gets pretty dark around these parts). The local village is a very small place, so for shops, pubs and the like you’ll want to head to Penrith or Appleby-in-Westmorland (both 15 minutes’ drive away). Also within a similar distance are the outer edges of the Lake District National Park and attractions including Lowther Castle. Closer to home, there are a couple of lovely walking areas nearby at Cliburn Moss and Whinfell Forest – wild areas where you might spot red squirrels and deer from time to time.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked We were on our way back from Scotland and wanted to break our journey half way. So I looked for a quiet camp site near Penrith and wasn't disappointed by my choice. We arrived to an empty field adjacent to a field of horses. It was easy to check in at the farm house and the owners were helpful during our short stay. The lack of shower facilities could be an issue for a longer stay. As this is a new venture the owners might rectify this in the future. It didn't take long to get into Penrith for supplies or the shores of Ullswater. We did think about staying another day but my wife had to get home for her dental appointment.

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked The whole experience has been a blessing. Such a beautiful campsite with a level field, wildlife everywhere plus the horses from the farm keep you company. The owners are excellent hosts ( we were lucky enough to get some fresh eggs the first morning !)
We stayed in our van using a tent as storage, which was perfect as it’s our first time camping in the van.
The site is 20 mins max away from Aldi, go outdoors and a lot of drive in options as well. 25/30 mins from the most stunning Ullswater lake.
The facilities are basic and clean, drinking water available from the tap on the field with toilets just off into the farm slightly.
We used a truck stop 15 mins down the road with THE best showers we’ve had all for only £3.
Overall 10/10 from us, we’ve stayed two extra nights !
