  • Peaceful back to basics Cumbria site with lovely Lake District views
  • A 10-minute drive to either Kendal or Windermere
  • Tree-lined grass pitch area a mile from the local village pub
Time for a slice of the simple life? Grab a peaceful Lake District pitch at Church Lane Campsite and immerse yourselves in proper scenic countryside with few distractions. This back to basics site has life’s essentials in place – in the form of drinking water, toilets and showers – but hasn’t gone overboard with other facilities, so you’ll simply be left to set up your space and soak up the gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. Pitches here are on grass with trees around the field to provide a bit of shelter and shade – and the views are pretty much green as far as you can see… This setting gives the place a remote atmosphere that’s well suited to adventurous travellers, nature lovers and serenity-seeking couples or families. That said, it’s not actually all that remote – handily, you’ll be able to drive to Kendal in about 10 minutes for cultural attractions, shops and places to eat, and popular Windermere is about the same distance in the other direction. Closer still are a smart rural restaurant and the little village of Crook, a mile away and the home of the local pub – both excellent options for a good feed.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Basic but perfect
Pitch options where anywhere you felt suitable, not marked out, but given the terrain is very jelly it limits to the outskirt parameters of each field really.
Facilities are clean and although basic were perfect, showers were hot and the toilets clean albeit portaloos

Disliked There are 4 portaloos would be nice to have gendered them off so 2x female 2x male

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Stayed here in our new Tentbox and couldn’t have picked a better spot. Church Lane Campsite is perfectly located between Kendal and Windermere, offering a simple, back-to-basics setup—just what we were after: pitch up, get a good night’s sleep, and grab a hot shower in the morning.

The site delivered exactly that, and more. When our car wouldn’t start as we were leaving, the owner, Rob, came down to help without hesitation. He stayed with us for a while, kept us company, and even drove us into the nearest village for food and drinks. I left thinking what a genuinely kind person he is—and the same goes for his two sons, who were equally friendly and down-to-earth.

Thanks again for the great hospitality.

(P.S. Turns out the battery was flat—we must’ve left something on. The mechanic thinks the jump leads were just connected the wrong way!)

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The Staff were great, so helpful getting you pitched up, he explained everything, the site was nice quite, some sloped ground but you can get a level pitch if early.

Hot shower

Disliked It could have been me to study the map better, but the postcode took you to the farm, there is a sign to correct you, but maybe a better postcode or What Three Words to get you to the camp gates. Could improve recycling bins as was a bit confusing, and others had mixed the bins up

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for such a lovely review! It was great to have you, and we're really glad you enjoyed your stay.

Just a note on the directions - we do provide a What Three Words in the booking email, which pinpoints to the entrance gate. Unfortunately Pitchup forces us to use our farmhouse postcode as the official address which is a couple of mins drive away. We'll copy and paste the information below for anyone reading:

'What3words: unlucky.ditching.twinkled. The site is on Back Lane. Please do not follow your satnav to LA8 8LQ, as this will take you to the farmhouse. From Crook Road, take the exit at St Catherine's Church. The site entrance is approximately 600 metres from the end of the road on the right-hand side.'

Thank you for your feedback on the bins - we make sure everything is sorted when we collect it. Into recyclables and general waste.

Very best wishes,

Church Lane Campsite

Liked A Glorious Brow to Kneel Down To…

Nestled at the top of Sunny Brow Farm, Church Lane Campsite felt like a quiet prayer answered for campers like us who seek simplicity, serenity, and starry skies. As the sun crested the brow of the hill each morning, it bathed the field in golden light.

This site is a minimalist’s dream: a peaceful field with just the essentials—clean toilets, water, and bins—without the clutter of overbuilt structures or artificial lighting. At night, the darkness was complete and comforting, perfect for stargazing or enjoying the glow of a campfire (yes, fires are allowed!).

The views were exceptional, stretching across the countryside in every direction, and the staff were genuinely lovely—friendly, helpful, and constantly checking in to keep the facilities spotless. It’s rare to see such care taken with such a simple setup.

But the real miracle? The price. In a time when many campsites are cashing in on camping’s popularity.

Local attractions

If you’re here to explore the attractions of the Lake District National Park, there’s surely no better place to start than Windermere (10 minutes’ drive) – it is, after all, England’s largest natural lake. Boat trips and various watersports (including kayaking and paddleboarding) can help you get out on the water, or you can stick to the lakeshore for a walk, a visit to the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (10 minutes) or adventure activities at Brockhole on Windermere (15 minutes). Other nearby natural attractions include Kentmere (20 minutes) and Rydal Cave (25 minutes); but if you hit a rainy day, maybe you’d prefer to head to Kendal (10 minutes) for its various museums and arts venues, or to Levens Hall (15 minutes), a little way south of the town. Something to keep the kids happy? Try the animal experiences at Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre (15 minutes) or Predator Experience – Wolf Experience UK (25 minutes). Or, if you’d like a bit of peace for a while, lose them in the labyrinth at Lakeland Maze Farm Park (15 minutes).
