  • In the Cumbrian hills a couple of miles from Witherslack
  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site
How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands. This is an excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats. Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities, plus a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

Valley View primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked Lovely quiet site with glorious fell views.
The toilets and showers were spotless. There is a well stocked shop on site selling the essentials as well as locally sourced meat products from the freezer. Fresh pastries can be ordered the evening before for breakfast in the morning. There is also a catering van that sells freshly made pizza’s Wednesdays and Fridays. Some mornings between 8.30 and 10.30 you can buy freshly filled baps, sausage and egg I can recommend. The shop also sells freshly made coffee.

There is a pub The Derby Arms 1.8 miles away approximately 40 minutes walk. On the way there you will see small orchards to the side of the road. The shop sells apple juice from the orchards and it is delicious just wish I had bought more! 100% apple juice, tastes so fresh.

Disliked Late check in at 3pm and early checkout 11am especially when you’re staying in a Campervan and not one of the pods or yurts.

No Elsan point.

Powered grass tent or campervan campsite (large)

Liked Lovely location. We went for a great walk up whitbarrow scar and enjoyed a meal in The Derby Arms. The campsite itself felt spacious and pitches were a good size and we were able to park the car at our pitch. Cars are not allowed to move round site after 8pm, which was nice and it kept the site feeling peaceful. If you are returning to site after this time there is a car parking area by the entrance. The washing up facilities are under cover and the water is piping hot. The toilets and showers were nice, modern and clean, The shower heads are fixed and do tend to spray. There are two hooks in the shower so take a couple of large bags with you and hang all your belongings up, including shoes. Anything on the floor will get drenched. Not a lot of room to get dressed, especially when you are trying to avoid the wet walls and floor so you might want an extra towel to stand on, or just get one if those large towel robes and some flip flops or similar and then get dressed back at your tent. It is not a problem, it is just nice to know this, so you can be prepared. The showers are on a sensor switch and you may have to press it half way through so take note where it is before you have shampoo on your head. We did not need to use the laundry facilities. There was also a nice covered communal area with picnic benches and lighting. There is a little on site shop that opens for a couple of hours in the evening/ tea time I think. You can order fresh croissants ready for the next morning, which we did and they were lovely. We also got some lovely jam from the shop. We did find out the shop does not stock rock pegs. I have never pitched up on such hard ground before. The people we went with on the next pitch were the same. Luckily they had rock pegs and we managed to share them out between the two of us to get our tents up. The actual pitch was nice and it was not uncomfortable at all, just bring rock pegs and a mallet. I don’t know if it was just the side of the site we were on or if all pitches were like that. If the shop had rock pegs to sell or loan that would have been excellent. They have fire pits, just help your self. Being able to have a fire when camping really adds to the experience. The site was very peaceful at night . It also had free WiFi . We will definitely be back to this site, and recommend it.

Disliked Excellent site, nothing we disliked, but the shop could stock a couple of camping essentials like rock pegs, as they were definitely needed for our pitch and our neighbours. Not really a negative though, as we should have come prepared for all eventualities.

Outstanding camp site. Would highly recommend. Great value for money.

Powered grass tent or campervan campsite (premium)

Liked Great site. Good size pitch. Clean and tidy. Showers and wash facilities excellent. Useful fridge and freezer available to use. Lovely and quiet, although loads of campers around. Had pizza nights a few evenings a week, freshly made on site, also fresh baked foods every morning ready to collect from the on-site shop each morning.

Disliked Minor issue related to hit and miss internet. My tent was a little way off from the transmitter, although full signal available if you make your way to seating next to main facilities and shop. I required a camp site with good internet as evening were on used to plan for the next days walking.

Power optional grass tent or campervan campsite (large)

Liked Lovely little site. All the amenities you need. Washer and drier for longer stays and free to use large fridge and freezer for non electric pitches. Showers facilities were excellent and the site was well maintained.

Disliked Being very picky to think of something but the track getting from the road to the reception was a bit like off roading at times, so that could be improved but apart from that nothing. I would also make sure you keep hold of your booking email as pitch up didn’t link with the site completely and it didn’t have the extra electric hook up that we had paid for on their system. Staff were lovely and it was all sorted when I showed them my email but could be tricky if you didn’t have it.

Valley View primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked The peace and space first night.

Disliked Showers way too hot could barely stand under and couldn't shower young kids. Second night group of young lasses and lads pitched up next to us. Wasn't so peaceful anymore didn't stop for the third paid for night. When booking rules for groups stated they weren't allowed.

The views were very scenic, the pitch was smooth and level. Also…

Valley View primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked The facilities, bathrooms and the staff were lovely and helpful. The croissant in the morning was great well worth it!

Disliked Unfortunately it’s very far from any public transport, I think it’s a couple of miles walk to the closest bus stop so not ideal if you’re travelling without a car like I was. If it was better placed closer to rail or bus links it would be pretty much perfect, that said if you have your own transport it would be fine

Local attractions

A particularly scenic way to explore these surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, 10 minutes' drive away, for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first. If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife. Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
