Surrounding landscape looking towards Lorton Valley and the fells

General

  • Luxurious yurts in the Lake District, 20 minutes' drive from Keswick
  • Peaceful field on the edge of a farm 10 mins' drive from Cockermouth
  • Bedding, woodburner and fully-equipped kitchen in each yurt

Lakes Yurts does exactly what it says on the tin, getting you out on a jolly spent in Central Asian-style accommodation in the Lake District National Park. This site’s set on a working family farm with a friendly atmosphere just outside the village of Brandlingill, in a peaceful setting with scenic views over the Lorton valley and fells.

So what exactly are the yurts like at this fab park? All measure 16ft and have coloured covers, cotton linings, a double sofa bed, two single sofa beds and bedding included, as well as a small woodburning stove (with a basket of logs and sticks provided to keep you toasty), a fully equipped kitchen with a gas camping stove to get you prepping meals with ease, and a solar-powered lamp and fairy lights for unwinding under with the box with board games.

Guests are given written info on the local area too, so they can go off on jaunts – including to lovely Lake District market towns like Cockermouth (under 10 minutes’ drive away) and Keswick (20) with their art museums, historic houses and ancient castles. For drives deep in the countryside, the lush Vale of Lorton and its Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater lakes are 15 minutes away.

Back at the site, amenities are in the same field as the yurts and those not keen on sharing will be pleased to know each one has its own private picnic table, shower and toilet...

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

The views are lovely. Hills and mountains. The yurt is great and the size inside is more than enough for 4 of us with a dog. Nicely kitted out with gas stove, pots and pans, cleaning stuff too. The log fire is brilliant and already made up for you. Put it on the first night and it was very cozy and warm. We went when the weather was hot but the fire took a slight chill out at night. The quilts are duck down and very warm. Beds are comfy too. There is no wifi or electricity which was great because we finally had a chance to sit around as a family and play board games which we all enjoyed. Very nice and comfortable place.
The compost toilet is novel for us but is very clean, great environmentaly and comfortable enough. The shower is great too. Lovely and hot. You get your own toilet and shower room. You feel secluded but there are enough shops and food a short drive away. The other yurts are far enough away for peace, quiet and privacy. Dependes on the people in them I suppose.
All in all a fantastic place to unwind.

The open air and natural beauty of the lake district, the view from the yurt we stayed in (ska fell) was stunning. Very basic eco site with no electric was a pleasant change from the busy city. At first we where apprehensive about no electric but we enjoyed it none the less.

    Disliked:

No electric was not stated untill after we booked via an email from the site owner. The drive to the allocated parking spots from the roadside gate was very muddy due to heavy rain my car was skidding around because of poor dirt road surface paired with a small gate entrance and a big car it was difficult.

Local attractions

As Lake District aficionados know full well, this area’s prime for puttering about on two feet or two wheels. Whinlatter Forest Park, England’s only mountain forest, is topnotch for cycle rides on the longest purpose-built bike trails in the Lake District, 10 minutes’ drive away; keep eyes peeled for the creatures that scamper around the area, from red and roe deer to Herdwick sheep and shrews.

If you’ve not spotted any critters, drop by the Lake District Wildlife Park in Keswick to see over 100 species 15 minutes away or view the animals underwater at the Lake District Coast Aquarium in Maryport (20 minutes) – a grand way to spend time if rainclouds are gathering.

Still pouring? Dive below ground for tours at Honister Slate Mine 35 minutes away, where visitors traverse the terrain on vertical climbs, rope-bridge walkways and steel ladders while learning about the 450-million-year-old volcanic slate.

Back in the open air, the Laal Ratty (Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, 45 minutes away from the site) will have you chugging along a vintage steam train from the coastal village of Ravenglass to 210ft above sea level at Dalegarth.
