  • Peaceful well-kept site 10 minutes' drive from central Carlisle
  • Next to the Reivers Route cycle path and Hadrians Wall Path
  • Handy stopover for long journeys: a mile and a half from the M6
They picked a good spot, did the Romans, when they were looking for somewhere to put Hadrian’s Wall – this part of the world is a mighty scenic one. Following their lead (albeit many a century later), the owners of Dandy Dinmont Caravan and Camping Park proved equally adept at selecting a fine location. Aiming to have the best of both worlds, they’ve set up shop in a peaceful rural corner that’s conveniently a mere 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of Carlisle and a mile and a half from the M6 (thus making it a handy stopover for travellers venturing north/south as well as a fab choice in its own right). Look out from the site’s own smartly-kept gardens and it’s all cracking country views; venture out and you’ll note that you’re not actually that far from modern civilisation – in fact, you’re handily placed for all sorts of amenities and attractions. A sizeable supermarket is a few minutes’ drive away, and there’s a bus stop a short stroll away, from where you can be whisked into Carlisle with minimal effort. Looking a little beyond Carlisle, there are Roman sites aplenty within half an hour or so (including that wall, of course), and you’re well placed for salmon fishing in the River Eden or walks in the Lake District (half an hour away). Back on site, facilities around the level pitches include bike storage for those travelling on two wheels, space for the nippers to play games and spankingly clean bathroom blocks with lashings of hot water for your shower.

Local attractions

So you’d like to see Hadrian’s Wall? A fine idea – how often do you get to see a manmade structure that’s lasted almost 2,000 years? If you’d like to really get to know it, set forth on the Hadrian’s Wall Path, an 84-mile trail that follows the original route from coast to coast. Not quite got the legs for that? Dip in and out with trips to selected parts: Birdoswald Roman Fort and Pike Hill Signal Tower are both about half an hour’s drive away, or you can amble to nearby parts straight from the site. When you’re done with Roman roaming, take your rambling legs to the Lake District (half an hour’s drive) or stick to an easier wander around 12th-century Lanercost Priory (20 minutes). Getting the urge to go urban? Carlisle’s castle, cathedral, racecourse and shops are 10 minutes away by car or 25 minutes by bus; the city also gives a nod to its Roman past at the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.
