  • Small, quiet site on a working farm with scenic views near a village
  • Woodland valley with walks, bike rides and riding trails all around
  • Peaceful Lake District site; no music, groups, ball games or under-15s
Moss Side Farm Campsite, near Cumbria's Broughton-in-Furness, should hit the spot for hikers: it's in a woodland valley with many footpaths leading directly from the farm. And for watery types too, as the farm is in the Lake District, 10 minutes' drive from the nearest lake and 40 from Windermere. And for cyclists, and horse riders, and those who like smashing views of lakeland fells leading down to the Irish Sea… This is a small, friendly and family-run site on a working hill farm with working dogs along with ducks, goats, pigs and hens. Three ladies' and three gents' showers, a freezer and a washing-up area are among the site amenities, and campfires are permitted. Moss Farm's nearest village is Broughton-in-Furness, a seven-minute drive or 30 or so minute walk away; here guests can buy bread from the award-winning Broughton bakery and groceries and meat from a family-run butcher and grocer. The village also has three pubs, two of which serve food, plus a restaurant, two cafés, a petrol station, a post office, a bank and a gift shop. Quiet well-behaved dogs are welcome at Moss Farm as long as they're kept on leads while on site. No music or radios may be used at this peaceful site, and groups, ball games and kids under 15 are not allowed.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Such a laidback attmophere, amazing back to basics camping. Had a great stay, and the views are incredible.

Disliked The bush heading into the camping ground NEEDS trimming, scratched the hell out of my van.
Farm dogs hanging around the campsite whcih is fine only it meant our dog needed to be out in the van alot which is very unfair.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Calm ruralness, excellent views. Fires are allowed. Friendly host. And, it is a farm! With farm animals and farm dogs!!
We had a bad experience prior, so we had to change our booking period (1 day earlier), no problems, no costs. Very lovely.

From the manager: Hi Rebecca, many thanks for your lovely review, and good to hear that we made up for your disappointments at the previous campsite.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Beautiful working farm. Lovely owners who were helpful and kind. I managed to book a railway pod as it was pouring and didn’t fancy putting the tent up and then back down in the rain. Very comfortable and easy walk into Broughton in Furness with all amenities.

Rail camping pod

Liked Lovely dogs

Disliked I understand the business owners may want an evening off every now and again, however I think it is unreasonable to prohibit guests from bringing their own firewood, whilst also being unable to provide a reliable alternative.

I am glad we didn’t travel in winter, and we urge anyone visiting to bring their own firewood if they wish to have a warm night’s sleep

From the manager: Ohh dear I m so sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay. We do sell fire wood at £7 per sack, £1.50 for kindling which I think is very reasonable. I state that fire wood sales finish at 7.00pm although we do often get knocks on the door after hours, some times up until 10.00pm, and if I’m still awake I greet with a smile, although at that time summoning a smile take a little more effort.
We do ask visitors to buy their wood from us for the stoves to try and prevent guests burning wood/coal/ heat logs which are unsuitable. Heat logs and coal have cracked our stoves in the past and logs too long do to fit in, encourage guests to leave the stove doors open which is a health and safety risk. I don’t make up rules to be awkward I add them as experiences force my hand so to try and keep running my little farm Campsite safe and manageable.
Thanks for staying and I hope you had a pleasant journey home.

Local attractions

Of the many footpaths straight from the farm, the main one is the Foxfield to Broughton route along a disused railway line right into Broughton. Other paths can take you to the Broughton Mills area, Seathwaite valley and Ulpha valley; ask the Moss Farm team to point you in the right direction. If you're in the area for watersports, Coniston Lake, the third biggest in the Lake District, is the closest to the farm and is 10 minutes' drive away. Otherwise try pony trekking at Spoon Hall near Coniston, Muirthwaite Green at Silecroft or Cumbrian Heavy Horses in the Whicham Valley, all within 15 minutes' drive. Historic house fans have many in the area to pick from, like Muncaster Castle, Sizer Castle, Holker Hall and Levens Hall, as well as many National Trust houses such as Dove House in Grasmere, home of daffs man William Wordsworth. The towns of Windermere and Ambleside are about 20 minutes' drive away, as is South Lakes Animal Park at Dalton-in-Furness, an attractive option for animal fans. The staff at the Broughton-in-Furness tourist information centre can give you tips on what's best to see and do.
