Pitches on a working farm
Far-reaching views
Trees shelter one side of the field
Beautiful fell views

  • Simple pop-up campsite on a farm in the Lake District National Park
  • Coniston Water half an hour’s drive; South Lakes Safari Zoo 40 minutes
  • Off-grid grass pitches; snack shed selling breakfasts and sandwiches
Total peace, amazing views and seemingly endlessly fell walking options – that’s what you get when you rock up at Crosbythwaite Campsite, a pop-up 15 minutes’ drive from Broughton-In-Furness in the Lake District National Park. This teeny nearly wild site has a limited number of neatly mown grass pitches, some sheltered by trees and all overlooking spectacular Birker Fell. You can source breakfast from the on-site Crosby Snack Shed, a little foodie oasis serving up good coffee and local sausages as well as takeaway cold drinks and sandwiches if you’re about to embark on a fell walk. You can also snap up homemade cakes, shortbread or ice creams to devour at the picnic tables, set next to a burbling stream and with those same gorgeous views over the Cumbrian fells. Otherwise on-site facilities are somewhat limited, stretching to a portable loo. Off site, there are a couple of pubs and food shops in Broughton-in-Furness. There is only a private, untreated water supply on site, so please bring along your own drinking water.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The location and getting to it (I was on a motorbike), beautiful area and a stream at the bottom of the site. The site was small and not crowded, lots of space and a couple of table/benches to use. There is a coffee shop but I arrived late and left early so it was closed.

Disliked The slope of the land, it is on the side of a hill and when in a tent there is nothing you can do to level it unlike a camper van.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Simple, quiet campsite in a beautiful location. The owners are friendly and the snack shed is a great added bonus! I stayed one night with my toddler and two dogs; we had planned for two but after discovering that our tent fly was leaking and with thunderstorms forecast we headed home early. We will definitely be back.

Beautiful, dog-friendly site - basic but had everything I needed!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Beautiful views from the campsite and lots of walks nearby. The farmer came over on my first evening to make sure everything was OK (a couple of the farm dogs also wandered round to say hello a few times!). One portaloo which was kept very clean, and a tap for water.
There are sheep and cows on the hills nearby and I enjoyed watching the swallows swooping over the neighbouring meadow.
The lovely little food cabin is great and was handy for getting a coffee and ice-cream on my first day before I'd set up my camping stove. The honesty box is there all the time with cakes and eggs.

Disliked The field is quite exposed, particularly if you pitch to get the best views.
When I was there another group of campers had 3 dogs with them that kept running around the field. That's obviously not the fault of the campsite owners but perhaps a "dogs on leads" policy would help (mine was on a long lead hitched to the fence).

Liked Beautiful location, friendly owner, great sausage sandwich from the shack in the morning! Facilities were basic (as described, not a criticism) but clean.

Remote basic good value, with a hut serving food and drinks in the am.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Great location with views; the cafe/cabin in the morning even though didn't use it (would have been a lifesaver if we'd needed), the lack of rules but general consideration from other campers nonetheless, isolated location.

Disliked Not much. Never saw the owner and I don't think that's expected, although I wasn't sure initially if I needed to check in. It's a small site (which is good) with - apart from the snack shack and honesty box outside of hours - just a single portaloo (which I saw being cleaned) and a tap and some picnic tables, so won't suit everyone. I like it basic and my teens appreciated the lack of washing facilities! I think the nearest pub or other facilities are a few miles away. The main word of caution is that much of the site is on a bit of a slope, so get there early or be prepared to sleep on a slant. Not enough to put me off and I would definitely go back.

Very helpful staff, beautiful site. Simple but all you really want

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Clean porta loos, beautiful wild location and views (exposed and windswept on our visit but of course no one can control that!), spacious fields and a decent amount of flat ground for tents and vans. Very responsive and helpful on text

Disliked Only one thing - Untreated private supply water (ominously labelled “drink at your own risk”) - not necessarily a problem in itself with the right equipment, but I don’t think i was made aware of on pitch up when booking. Probably wouldn’t have booked had I known this because I didn’t have enough gas to boil all water, didnt fancy taking the risk, and hadn’t brought chlorine or filter equipment. This will be fine for some campers especially if they know in advance though.

From the manager: Thank you for your review of our pop up campsite. I'm sorry you were upset about the private water supply and glad you pointed out that it is not stated on PitchUp as we will rectify that so other potential customers are made aware. We all drink this private water supply without any issues.

Thanks again for taking the time to review us.

Am excellent stay for a night or two!
