  • Scenic Eden Valley glamping site set in 12 acres on a Cumbria farm
  • Hadrian’s Wall 15 minutes’ drive and the Lake District 40 minutes
  • Lakeside pitches with views over the fells; pubs 10 minutes’ drive
Set deep in Cumbrian fell country 15 minutes’ drive from the pretty town of Brampton, Otter Moss Accommodation has a range of smart glamping options to suit couples, families and groups. Set within 12 acres on a working dairy farm, most of the site is set around a large meadow, which overlooks a lake with three islands in it – a rowing boat is available if you like messing about on the water. The site is located at the northern end of the gorgeous Eden Valley, with far-reaching views over the fells, and on clear days you can see as far as the Solway Firth and the hills of the Lake District National Park. All accommodation units here come with some form of heating and are well equipped with kitchen utensils and stoves. Along with all bedding and towels, firepits/barbecues are also included but you’ll need to supply your own wood. If you’re not going down the self-catering route, the area also has lots of local pubs, with a good selection available within a five-mile radius.

Cabin

Liked Remote and stunning location. Very cosy cabin with all you’d need for a weekend away.

Disliked Not really a dislike, but no visitor folder with recommendations for local restaurants/pubs and walks.

WiFi very poor, but the whole point was to switch off. So not an issue for me

Camping pod

Liked Compact and very well equipped cabin. Everything from a tin opener to double gas camping hob to cook on. Mattresses were comfy and space under the beds to store luggage. Kids had a great time hunting for pine cones and investigating the pond and spotting ducks!
We visited Hadrian’s Wall and went for some food at the Duke of Cumberland - recommend it all.

Disliked I liked everything - it was a v tranquil and nice stay.
If I were to be picky then the blind at the back of the cabin needs reversed so it blocks the light and a small fridge for storing milk in for the kids breakfast would be handy. Although we stayed on the hottest weekend of the year so I imagine under normal UK weather to have milk in a cool box would be fine!

Shepherd's hut

Liked Very comfortable Shepherds Hut in a beautiful and peaceful location. Enjoyed 3 days relaxing and chilling out. Listening to my music and audiobooks. Weather was mixed. Wee heater kept me nice and warm. Shepherds Hut well laid out and had the basics that I needed. Really enjoyed my time and highly recommend a stay here. Wouldn’t hesitate to book again. Great communication with Ruth from booking to leaving.

Local attractions

There’s certainly some spectacular countryside around these parts. It’s about 40 minutes to drive to hiking, climbing and cycling activities in Lake District National Park, while the remote and untamed North Pennines National Landscape (15 minutes) also offers walking and biking options by the dozen. Fancy a mini history lesson? Many parts of Hadrian’s Wall are within 15 minutes’ drive, with the remains of an ancient Roman garrison at Birdoswald Roman Fort (25 minutes), which also has an informative visitor centre and stunning views over the fells of Cumbria and the River Irthing. If the kids are just not interested in heritage, treat them to an afternoon of quad biking and ferret racing at Walby Farm Park (20 minutes), where you can also meet gentle Shire horses and alpacas. They can also try out watersports, feed the swans and follow the animal-themed sculpture walk at Talkin Tarn Country Park (10 minutes), or discover the beauty of Ullswater (40 minutes) on a steamer cruise around the lake.
