Perfect night for camping (added by manager 23 jun 2021)

  • Wild camping site in West Yorkshire two miles from the Peak District
  • A 10-minute drive from Holmfirth Vineyard; 20 minutes from Black Hill
  • Pub within walking distance; firepits provided per pitch
From pedalling or hiking around the Peak District National Park to easy-going vineyard tours, there’s much to be merry about at Swallow Barn Farm, including its LGBTQ+ friendly approach. All are welcome here, to kick back and recharge your batteries on a spot in a West Yorkshire meadow. This wild camping site is splendid for a simple stay with plenty of scenery on a working smallholding with sheep, lambs and cows, and the edge of the Peak District National Park 10 minutes’ drive away. That setting means there are no shortages of leisurely walks in the surrounding area, plus more testing trails deep in the national park (including courses suited to mountain bikers). If your feet feel a little sore afterwards, there’s a firepit alongside each pitch where you can give them a rest. This site is off-grid, so facilities on site are kept straightforward: there's no wifi but you'll have access to a portable toilet and recycling point. Handily, there’s a space to park your car next to the field (with staff around to help cart your gear) and the site supplies guests with water upon arrival so you can carry on with your thirsty work (perhaps building a campfire, with wood available to buy at the farm…) Get a good kip on a full belly, too… conveniently, the site is a five-minute drive from Holmfirth and its shops, pubs and restaurants. If you'd rather walk, there’s also a pub 20 minutes’ walk away and stops such as a brewery and fish and chip shop within walking distance too.

Liked: Great hosts who couldn't do enough for us and the kids, and even helped when our aging tent poles started to fail! Close to the town but not too close, great spot to camp.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Really friendly welcome. So peaceful - literally a field in middle of nowhere which was just what we wanted. Pub with decent bar snacks 20 minute walk away. Hard to find somewhere that takes one night bookings in august - especially on a Saturday but we hit lucky booking here. Fire pit provided - £5 bag of logs was great value. First visit but won’t be the last. Thanks for your hospitality Simon

Local attractions

If you can’t already tell the difference between dry and sweet or red and rosé, a visit to Holmfirth Vineyard (10 minutes’ drive) might help you brush up on your wine-tasting skills. With vineyard tours and wine tasting, it’s likely you’ll leave with your tastebuds tingling. Planning on a fair few walks while you’re near the Peak District too? You may want to join the Pennine Way over Black Hill (20 minutes) – or, for a walk outside the national park, it’s around an hour's loop to and from the car park to the splendid waterfalls at Folly Dolly Falls (15 minutes). For a more leisurely stroll, Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens (20 minutes) has the gardens of a historical home and a museum inside. Other easy-going spots include the open-air exhibitions around the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (half an hour) or the nature walks around Wentworth Castle Gardens (half an hour). If you’re on the lookout for other outdoor activities, Underbank Reservoir (15 minutes) is the place to add watersports like paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing to your itinerary.
