Entrance to the site

  • West Yorkshire wild camping on the outskirts of Hebden Bridge
  • National Trust Hardcastle Crags 10 minutes’ drive; Halifax 25 minutes
  • Expansive views of Calder Valley from the site; hiking trails nearby
A public service announcement for suggestible folks: don’t let the fictional criminal shenanigans of the BBC drama Happy Valley (and set in these very hills) deter you from booking a spot at Happy Valley Camping. In fact, you could turn your wild West Yorkshire holiday into a ‘spot the location’-type break if you like… At this small site on the outskirts of the market town of Hebden Bridge (five minutes’ drive or a 20-minute walk), you can let the kids run around free on the grassy field as you relax and take in the spectacular landscape of the Calder Valley. Meanwhile, active types can set off on long walks (with their four-legged companion in tow) along the River Calder, up hills like High Brown Knoll (10 minutes’ drive) or through the woodlands surrounding National Trust - Hardcastle Crags (10 minutes), home of the 19th-century Gibson Mill – along with wildlife including roe deer and woodpeckers. There are heaps of cycling paths around, too, so don’t forget to strap your mountain bike to the roof rack before leaving home. There’s a portable toilet on site, but not much else in the way of amenities: there is no running water, so each booking is provided with bottled drinking water. What you will also find is a warm welcome and plenty of peace and quiet to recharge your batteries.

What customers say

This campsite offers peaceful stays with lovely valley views, a short walk from Hebden Bridge. Amenities are basic, with a clean portaloo and delivered water. Some guests felt the price was high for what's offered. The steep walk back from town is noted, but friendly owners and a tranquil atmosphere are praised, with many wanting to return.

Primitive grass and gravel campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We stayed at Happy Valley Camping in our campervan for one night and absolutely loved it. The location is stunning, with amazing views overlooking the Calder Valley – a really peaceful spot to wake up to. The site itself was clean and well looked after. The host was warm and welcoming, even coming round with water which was a thoughtful touch.

It’s a small, friendly site that feels tucked away, yet it’s easy to get to and within a 20-minute walk of a pub, which made for a nice evening stroll. It felt safe, quiet, and relaxing – a perfect stopover, but also somewhere we’d happily spend more time.

Disliked The site itself doesn’t really have any major downsides. Access could be a bit tricky in wintry conditions, and some of the pitches aren’t completely flat, but these are only small considerations in an otherwise excellent stay.

Primitive grass and gravel campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Tidy basic site with easy access to Hebden Bridge. Steep hill back which was fine but some may need to take a taxi .

Disliked The neighbour got bit upset but hand on heart there was no noise at all by campers .
Seemed unreasonable to me and needs to chill out . Site owners dealt with it the same night . This was only 10pm there was only 2 sets of campers chatting in their tents

Primitive grass and gravel campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely view, very peaceful, clean portoloo, friendly site manager. Short 15 minute walk into Hebdon Bridge and loads of lovely bars/eateries there. A vintage festival was on during out stay which was a fab bonus. Highlight of the stay was when we were chilling in our hammock for the sunset and 2 owls flew over us. Would happily recommend this site and look forward to returning when we're next in the area.

Local attractions

Oxenhope (15 minutes’ drive) marks the starting point of the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (KWVR), a five-mile heritage track with steam trains travelling through the Worth Valley. The KWVR is also known for its association with the 1970s film The Railway Children, which was filmed around these parts. Rainy day and the kids are getting restless? Take them to Halifax (25 minutes) and Eureka! The National Children’s Museum, where they can explore several themed interactive zones (including the human body and technology) or just get creative in the play areas. Stop for a bite to eat at Halifax Borough Market before visiting the 15th-century Minster. You’re close to Brontë Country here, and you can learn all about the famed writing sisters at the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth (25 minutes), where exhibits include original furniture and assorted personal items. Then take a walk up to the Bronte Waterfall and sit on Charlotte’s Chair (said to be where the Jane Eyre author would come to seek inspiration).
