  • Spacious site behind the Old George Inn in Sykehouse, South Yorkshire
  • Close to New Junction Canal; Yorkshire Wildlife Park 35 minutes’ drive
  • Food, drink and a beer garden on site; set on the Trans Pennine Trail
Fancy a getaway in the grounds of a pub, with food and drink on tap? Between Rivers Camping is a fine spot for such a thing, set behind the Old George Inn in Sykehouse, South Yorkshire. Here, you shouldn't have too much trouble keeping yourself fed and watered. With a field of almost an acre, there is plenty of room for kids to run around with a ball. The site is also set right on the coast-to-coast Trans Pennine Trail, making it a wonderful and welcoming overnight stop for long-distance hikers – as well as it being a pretty and peaceful place to linger for a few days. Dog-friendly inside and out, the Old George serves up tasty menus and an assortment of soft drinks and craft drinks seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and evening dinners (food service finishes at 4.30pm on Sundays) served either in the cosy beamed interior or in the large, paved beer garden on warmer days. You can use the plugs to boost your phones when the pub is open. There's also a hairdryer in the shower and toilet block.

Please note
  • Dogs are not allowed if you are staying in the accommodation units.
  • Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.
  • At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.
  • Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.
  • Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.
  • Additional toilets are available during pub opening times (9.30am - 9.30pm). During colder months awnings will need to be pitched on the gravel and cars will need to be parked in the car park. As the site is adjoining the pub, please be aware there may be some noise from pub customers. Wifi is free but only available in the café, pub and beer garden; unfortunately it is not strong enough to reach the camping field and the site's rural location means the 4G signal is also weak.

Primitive grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked A welcoming site, well kept with plenty of space. The showers/toilets were a good size and well maintained.
There’s a playground for the children which can be seen from wherever you pitch up. It was a good place to stay,

Primitive grass and gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked Generous pitches, with gravel and grass. The pub is a great asset - didn’t try the food but the drinks (and cocktails) were top notch. Was a bit concerned about whether the music would travel but needn’t have bothered - was a pleasant background blur from the pitch. Really great showers. Not an area I spend much time in but would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Disliked Splitting hairs.. but the steps to the bathroom were steep. Only way to dry hands was by using toilet paper. The bathroom doors didn’t show whether occupied from the outside & an extra hook or two for clothes would’ve been helpful.. but really, no fundamental issues & one of the better sites I’ve stayed at.

A lovely glamping experience!

Route directions

From the M18 (Thorne junction), turn off the roundabout onto Selby Road. Do not take the left-hand turning onto Ferry Road, which leads onto Cowick Road and Fishlake, as it is not suitable for heavy or wide vehicles. Instead, continue for approximately one mile on Selby Road towards Snaith and take the next left (after going over a bridge) onto Between Rivers Lane. This leads into Sykehouse, where the site is located.

Local attractions

Sykehouse village is in a rural spot close to the New Junction Canal (20 minutes’ walk) where you can coarse fish for roach and carp, or stroll the towpath keeping your eyes peeled for kingfishers flitting about over the water. You can also get the hiking boots on to follow sections of the Trans Pennine Trail or take family walks on looped routes in Brockadale Nature Reserve (25 minutes’ drive). If you’re up for exploring by car, combine culture with exercise and stroll the contemporary installations at Yorkshire Sculpture Park (50 minutes). Go back in time with a poke around local stately piles like Wentworth Woodhouse (45 minutes, grand state apartments) and Brodsworth Hall and Gardens (half an hour, Victorian splendour). Children on board for the hols? Treat them to walking safaris bringing them (safely) up close to lions and tigers at Yorkshire Wildlife Park (35 minutes), or take younger kids to pet friendly sheep and Highland cows at Wigfield Farm (50 minutes). And you’re covered for rainy days as well, as you can divert to the interactive displays at Magna Science Adventure Centre (45 minutes).
