  • Secluded glamping on a farm just outside Northumberland National Park
  • Under a 10-minute drive to Rothbury and 25 minutes to Alnwick
  • Ensuite shepherd's huts with kitchens, woodburning stoves and campfire
Hoping to snuggle up in a shepherd’s hut somewhere stunning and secluded for the weekend with plenty of walks all around? You’ve come to the right place: the units at Westfield House Farm are set in the pretty upper Coquetdale valley, in the middle of quiet countryside and on the edge of the Northumberland National Park for hikes up Windy Gyle and along the Border Ridge loop. With Westfield House Farm being a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, it’s very peaceful here, at the end of its own private road and as part of Natural England’s Higher Level Stewardship scheme. It's cared for by owners Tim and Emma – with a little assistance from their three young daughters – with the aim of boosting local wildlife and biodiversity including deer, otters, stoats and buzzards. Wildlife such as the resident moorhen roams freely next to the luxury ensuite shepherd's huts, which all have personal toilets, showers and The White Company bathroom amenities as well as kitchen facilities, woodburning stoves and double beds with crisp white linen. Outside is a tripod grill for cooking in the open air using the barbecue utensils and there are snug blankets for cosying up after dark with a juicy burger in hand under Northumberlands’ stunning starscapes. Breakfast butties are available in the morning (just order in advance), so there’s no need to set the grill alight if you’re not feeling up to cooking.

Local attractions

This site a five-minute drive from the market town of Rothbury is sandwiched between the castle-covered Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Hadrian’s Wall, the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire, so there’s scenic stuff to do whichever direction you head towards. Hot on history? Peer through the doors of stately homes like the National Trust’s Cragside (under 15 minutes’ drive) or go further to Wallington for a handsome house among scenic hills half an hour away. For cycles and strolls, biking and walking paths go straight from the site’s front door – Simonside on the opposite side of the valley is a popular amble that gives 360-degree views over Northumberland after quite a short climb while Harwood Forest (35 minutes) and Thrunton Woods (20 minutes) are both popular mountain biking spots. Rather ride on the road with top scenery all around? Head to Whittingham vale (20 minutes), Redesdale (30 minutes) and the Cheviot Hills (an hour).
