The paddock

  • Small family campsite on the edge of Northumberland National Park
  • Wallington five minutes' drive, and Vindolanda 35 minutes
  • Bike storage; pick-up from stations; shops and café five minutes’ walk
If you’re after a rural camping adventure that will lighten your self-catering burden, you’ll be pleased to hear about KMF Camping on the Kirkharle Estate in Northumberland. It’s just a five-minute stroll away from Kirkharle Courtyard, which has artisan shops, a deli, playground and a café called The Running Fox Bakery Café (just the spot for brunch). But what of the campsite? The level paddock has spacious pitches with plenty of room to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The friendly, inquisitive resident alpacas may also give you a warm welcome. If you’re happy to give alfresco cooking a go, bring barbecues (off-ground only please) or hire a firepit when you arrive. Logs are also available to buy. Walkers can access lots of walks straight from the pitches, including a couple of great circular routes around the lake, where you’ll (hopefully) spy some local wildlife – and of course there are lots of sheep around in neighbouring fields. For those of you planning to cycle, there’s a secure outhouse for the safe storage of your bikes. The site owners are also happy to arrange a pick-up and drop-off from local stations – including Newcastle – for a small fee and some advance notice. Getting out to see the scenery should be straightforward – there are myriad walks and cycle routes in Northumberland National Park (10 minutes' drive) and drivers can join the extremely popular Northumberland 250 road-trip route at Otterburn (15 minutes). The views don't stop at sundown – KMF Camping is deep in Northumberland’s dark-skies area, and on a clear night you'll have spectacular uninterrupted views of the stars.

Liked I took my girl (4y) and boy (13y) for a few nights here recently. The three of us camp a lot, but I have never found any sites that ticked the boxes for me. I love the idea of wild camping, but I don't think I'm quite ready to tackle that with a 4-year-old, and it's difficult to do legally in England.
The other sites we end up at I find are usually loud, with big groups blasting terrible music, seem to shout to communicate, hammer the cans and rock the B&M BBQ's...not for me!

KMF was exactly what I was looking for, and this is the only one both the kids have asked straight away to book it again...so I have a few weeks later.

Peaceful, picturesque, some lovely wildlife (my son loved tracking the white owl on the evening), and girl loved feeding the Alpacas, private spaced-out pitches with tall grass and hills separating the pitches and cars kept separate...you feel like you have the place to yourself, milk and eggs available, plenty for both the kids to do, the hosts were fantastic, they couldn't have helped any more and made it a personal experience, (asking if I needed picking up, helped carry my gear from my car to the pitch, interacted with both my kids and knew everyone's names on site.)

Disliked None

From the manager: Wow. Thanks for this fabulous review Mick, it’s everything we want people to feel! See you again later this month 😊🏕️

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked This campsite is a hidden gem.. relaxing, beautiful surroundings, generous sized pitches in between the wild flower meadows. Facilities clean and eco friendly will definitely be returning to this site and would definitely recommend to fellow campers. The hosts are very helpful, meet and greet even helped us getting our items to our pitch.

From the manager: Thanks so much Kevin, lovely to meet you both. We look forward to seeing you again.

Liked Very spacious and quiet. Very helpful staff even letting children feed the animals. As my children do have extra needs they understood that they needed space and quiet. Wonderful calm place to stay even a little hut for children to have extra time a space to play or bug hunt. Told us where local attractions where a what was near by.
Facilities where clean an even tho compost toilet there was no smell at all it was lovely a clean.

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review. It was nice to meet you all. See you again soon!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Wonderful half term camping!

Gillian and Paul could not have done more, from allowing us to store our tent/equipment prior to pitching in their barn, to charging up my Jackery when it ran out and allowing our tent to remain pitched for a little while longer to dry out after a downpour during departure; they made our stay the best it could be.

Pitches are very spacious and loads of room between each pitch, with cut walk away through a meadow. My children roamed free and feral! They loved the alpacas and meeting Godzilla the tortoise 🐢 a trip of no worries, plenty of fresh air, trips to the running fox, play park and the milk shake vending machine!

Located a 5 minute walk from Kirkharle Courtyard, with quaint local shops, cafes and a play park. 10 minute drive to Wallington National Trust property and just off main road to access Morpeth’s and Alnwick.
Campsite is fully enclosed. Very safe for little ones.
We will definitely be back.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review Andrea. It was our pleasure and lovely to meet you all. See you again soon 😊

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The location, the host’s, the animals, the space, facilities, price, the milkshake machine

Disliked The cafe (for some reason wouldn’t make eggs for the customers, even the waitress didn’t understand it)

From the manager: Thanks so much Steve. We are happy you had a great time. Shame about the eggs at The Running Fox! See you again soon.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Loved the pitches being limited to 6, this meant all the pitches were lovely and spread out giving lots of room for everyone and more privacy as well. Liked that the car park was away from the tents so the kids were safe to run about. The best bits were the amazing Alpaca's and the friendliness and helpfulness of Paul and Gillian. The camp site is also in a great location with plenty of walks available from the campsite itself and a lovely coffeshop beside it. Plus many sites like Hadrian's wall and national trust/english heritage are near by. We'll definitly be back.

From the manager: Thank you so much Colin. It was a pleasure to have you all and we look forward to seeing you again. Thanks again for the lovely picture 😊🏕️

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Great campsite with lovely ameneties, incl adjacent Running Fox cafe and milk shake machine (24/7) and larder-style shop. The post office in Belsay sells good sausages for BBQs. The owners can provide fire retardant blankets for fire pits to avoid burning of grass/fire risk.

Disliked Nothing. There is no wi-fi, but that's not needed anyway and mobile reception is fine.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked What a brilliant place! Beautiful scenery, dark skies and great views all around. The site has a limited number of pitches so you always have your own space; lots of eco-friendly touches with composting loos and plenty of recycling. The composting loos were the cleanest I've ever seen and it was great to see accessible facilities too, which isn't common on many campsites. Fresh eggs are available from the hens and lovely to see the curious alpacas in the next field - there's plenty of wildlife to see too, with swallows circling around and owls to be heard at night. A bonus was the 5 minute walk to the nearby bakery and the historic church next door. Paul was really friendly and happy to put us up for an extra night - we'll definitely be back.

Disliked Nothing!

From the manager: Thanks for taking the time to do this fabulous review. Hope to see you again soon :)

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The scenery is stunning. Easy access and good location for either walking out from the site or driving into nearby areas.
Paul and Gillian were lovely, super helpful and accommodating. They let our little ones help with the Alpaca feeding.
The site is an Exo site, the facilities were all super clean and stocked.
There are little crafty shops, a Running Fox and art gallery on site too.
Would definitely return.

From the manager: Thanks so much for the lovely review, hope to see you again :)

Local attractions

The campsite grants easy access to the handy A696 road, and within roughly 10 minutes’ drive you can be at the National Trust-owned properties of Wallington – with collections of paintings, decorative arts and ceramics – or Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, known for its neoclassical architecture and garden walks. Further afield, Cragside (half an hour) turns up art deco interiors and woodland strolls. Those of you with a fascination for all things historical can head for Hadrian’s Wall (20 minutes' drive) for a yomp in the footsteps of ancient Roman, or drop by the old Roman camp at Vindolanda (35 minutes). If the kids object to all that culture, treat them to close encounters with meerkats, raptors and giant bats at Northumberland Zoo (35 minutes), or spend the day at Alnwick Castle and Gardens (45 minutes), home of Harry Potter film locations, a curiously enticing poison garden and medieval enactments. Maybe they’d also like a day at the beach? Bamburgh (an hour) has seemingly endless expanses of sand and a stately castle to explore.
