  • Small family campsite on the edge of Northumberland National Park
  • Cragside half an hour’s drive, and Vindolanda 35 minutes
  • Bike storage; pick-up from stations; shops and café five minutes’ walk
If you’re after a rural camping adventure that's near a handy café or food shop to lighten your self-catering burden, you’ll be pleased to hear about KMF Camping on the Kirkharle Estate in Northumberland. It’s five minutes’ stroll from the artisan shops, coffee shop and deli at Kirkharle Courtyard – just the spot for breakfast, a browse of the shops of your stay and a runaround at the play area for the kids. But what of the campsite? The level paddock has spacious pitches with plenty of room to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. If you’re happy to give alfresco cooking a go, bring barbecues (off-ground only please) or hire a firepit when you arrive. Logs are also available to buy. Walkers can access lots of walks straight from the pitches, including a couple of great circular routes around the lake, where you’ll (hopefully) spy some local wildlife – and of course there are lots of sheep around in neighbouring fields. For those of you planning to cycle, there’s a secure outhouse for the safe storage of your bikes. The site owners are also happy to arrange a pick-up and drop-off from local stations – including Newcastle – for a small fee and some advance notice. Getting out to see the scenery should be straightforward – there are myriad walks and cycle routes in Northumberland National Park (10 minutes' drive) and drivers can join the extremely popular Northumberland 250 road-trip route at Otterburn (15 minutes). The views don't stop at sundown – KMF Camping is deep in Northumberland’s dark-skies area, and on a clear night you'll have spectacular uninterrupted views of the stars.

Jean shepherd's hut

Liked: Everything about the stay was perfect. A beautiful cosy hut furnished with everything that you need. Beautiful setting and a lovely stroll nearby taking in the local history. We wanted a 'get away from it all' break and this is exactly what we got. The hosts Paul and Gillian couldn't do enough for you and we have already enquired about booking two more stays.

Disliked: Nothing. There was a compost toilet which may not be everyone's ideal BUT it was spotlessly clean, no smells at all and a fabulous view !

From the manager: Thanks Debbie for your lovely review, we are glad you chose to see in the new year with us! See you again soon :)

Jean shepherd's hut

Liked: Absolutely wonderful stay in Jean the Shepherds Hut. Paul was a fantastic host, very helpful, friendly and approachable. The accommodation itself was beautiful and cosy with some lovely touches. Lovely coffee and some snacks provided, comfy bed, lots of logs for the fire. Beautiful views and even the wild weather added to the atmosphere. Even the composting toilet had character 😅 Communication before and during the stay was perfect. Would 100% return.

Disliked: It was extremely windy when we were there so it was a little tricky to sleep with the noise and rocking of the hut. It’s a fairly exposed area , and to be expected in winter! It wouldn’t put me off staying again but I’d definitely recommend bringing ear plugs just incase it is adverse weather.

From the manager: Thanks you for your fabulous review. The weather was slightly wild while you were here and of course very calm the following night! Hope to see you again in 2024 😊

Jean shepherd's hut

Liked: Such a beautiful hut, festively decorated too! Plenty of storage to keep our things so they didn't get in the way. The log fire kept us very warm, and Paul and Gillian brought more logs by in the morning to make sure we stayed warm too! We had everything we needed, including pots, pans, cutlery, and crockery, as well as washing up things. Paul and Gillian are absolutely lovely, nothing was too much trouble and they left us snacks and drinks to have too. They'd kindly warmed the hut up for us prior to our arrival which was incredibly kind of them. The facilities were clean and well maintained. Overall a very beautiful place to stay even when it's raining and muddy!

Jean shepherd's hut

Liked: Fantastic night camping with friends. After a friendly welcome, we had the place to ourselves and had all we needed with the pod, tipi and tent all set up as well as everything we needed for a great campfire. Everything was clean and well cared for and we enjoyed visiting Kirkharle courtyard and church.

1 bedroom rental tent

Liked: Have stayed twice at this site now as someone who has not camped before. First time was in the ready made tent which is ideal for someone who wants to try camping without the stress of putting your own tent up, the second time I took my own tent. Site is in a lovely location with nice places to walk and conveniently located next to Kirkharle Courtyard so can by snacks or eat in the cafe and also shops to browse in. Was very nervous on my first visit but was immediately put at ease once greeted by Paul who was very friendly and helpful. Site had everything I needed and I thouroughly enjoyed both my stays.

Jean shepherd's hut

Liked: Couldn’t recommend this place more, it’s a beautiful area. Paul and Gillian are super accommodating. Going above and beyond. For it being a new place, they have done a fantastic job so far. Super excited to see what else they have in store for their future plans for the campsite. The Jean hut was beautiful, a lot bigger than we expected, super cosy and personal touch were so lovely and thoughtful, with the welcome basket of homemade Kirkharle fudge coffee and Northumberland biscuits. The weather helped a lot because the views where beautiful. The night sky is fascinating and I wished I could of taken a photo but even a photo wouldn’t do it justice. The walk around the campsite was beautiful, it’s nice that it connects back to the courtyard. Had a few encounters with the staff and they were all so welcoming. We brought a few things from the shops and had some food and coffee, was lovely sitting in the courtyard. There wasn’t much we didn’t like to be honest.

Disliked: There was two woman with their 2 kids who also stayed and when we arrived we overheard them and they were not pleased that they couldn’t park closer to their tent. Which wasn’t that far, Paul was super with them. Had so much patience and helpful. They played music loud late evening, and we thought they could of been abit more mindful for the people around them. Paul did have a word with them and it was resolved. I think it’s more frustration on how they acted and this had no reflection on Paul’s and Gillian’s hard work.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: We loved everything about this place, to start with was a lovely warm greeting by Paul and Gillian, then me and my son had the bestest time going on our little adventures around the camp visiting the little stream and seeing the butterflies and letting the kids blow off some steam at the local park and created some fantastic core memories cooking marshmallows beside the fire and under the stars with the rest of my family that will forever be imbedded in our hearts, not forgetting to mention how awesome the shower is too that thing was so gooood lol it would be a pleasure to return again some time real soon thank you. Local attractions

The campsite grants easy access to the handy A696 road, and within roughly 10 minutes’ drive you can be at the National Trust-owned properties of Wallington – with collections of paintings, decorative arts and ceramics – or Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, known for its neoclassical architecture and garden walks. Further afield, Cragside (half an hour) turns up art deco interiors and woodland strolls. Those of you with a fascination for all things historical can head for Hadrian’s Wall (20 minutes' drive) for a yomp in the footsteps of ancient Roman, or drop by the old Roman camp at Vindolanda (35 minutes). If the kids object to all that culture, treat them to close encounters with meerkats, raptors and giant bats at Northumberland Zoo (35 minutes), or spend the day at Alnwick Castle and Gardens (45 minutes), home of Harry Potter film locations, a curiously enticing poison garden and medieval enactments. Maybe they’d also like a day at the beach? Bamburgh (an hour) has seemingly endless expanses of sand and a stately castle to explore.
