  • Back to basics site with large pitches on a family-run livestock farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Wallington Hall and 25 minutes to Hadrian's Wall
  • Family-friendly, with easy access to the St. Oswald’s Way
Middle White Hill Camping is part of a working family farm deep in rural Northumberland – the sort of place where you can really soak up the sights, smells and sounds of the countryside. It’s surrounded by gorgeous countryside, with views stretching across to Simonside Hill and the rugged moorland of the Wannies. Keep eyes and ears open for wildlife too: you might hear the distinctive calls of curlews and oystercatchers, and spot the odd deer and hare. The site is located next to the popular St. Oswald's Way walking route at Knowesgate, a mile from Kirkwhelpington village. If you don’t fancy quite such a long distance endeavour, there are also plenty of more leisurely walks from the site and within a short drive of the site. The outlook may be decidedly rural, but this small, spacious site is in fact very accessible, as it’s next to a B road and near to the A696, about half an hour’s drive from Newcastle upon Tyne. There’s something to do in pretty much every direction: head north for the Northumberland National Park and the village of Otterburn, look west to Kielder Water, go south to Belsay and Ponteland, or aim east for the market town of Morpeth and the coast beyond. The site provides very basic facilities only, but you’ll have access to a portable toilet, drinking water and water for washing dishes and cooking. It’s a pick-your-own-pitch setup here, and guest numbers are always kept small so you’ll be assured of plenty of space (and you can park your car by the pitch for easy unloading too). Charcoal barbecues are permitted but must be raised off the ground. There are limited numbers of firepits to hire and logs to buy, so you’re welcome to bring your own firepits and logs (note that logs must be natural timber and nail-free).

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: After a tough day of walking, spotting the campsite (well, someone's tent!) was the best feeling ever. This is the perfect stop for anyone on the St Oswald's Way route. My stay was peaceful and with breathtaking views from my tent back towards the Simonside Hills. Frances and Kevin were very welcoming and the campsite was pristine.

Liked: Lovely quiet and spacious site. The site has basic facilities but really clean and well stocked, and perfect for our needs. We made good use of the games, and had a very nice welcome from the family who manage the site. Fantastic dark skies on a clear night. We'll definitely be back.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We had no complaints, everything was fantastic! Everything on site was immaculate, the owners (and their children) accommodated everyone with anything they could. Very helpful in finding us information to take our kayak & paddle boards out. They fetched us fresh water, lots of garden games and maps and information to use. We’ll definitely be back, it was genuinely better than what their website has listed. Thank you so much for an awesome weekend, kids loved it!
