  • Smart wooden pods a short walk from the village of Langley
  • A 15-minute' drive from Hexham and Hadrian's Wall
  • 14-acre trout lake on site, with tackle hire and tuition available
Planning some Pennines pottering? Pick a pod at Langley Dam Glamping to stay at a place so well prepped for days of rural roaming they’ve even kitted the units out with Ordnance Survey maps to aid with route plotting. These pods are in something of a prime position, surrounded by the scenic North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just outside the little village of Langley and a 15-minute stroll from a fab local inn. Easily head out for hikes or bike rides from here, or strike forth for the market town of Hexham or the historic remains of Hadrian’s Wall, both 15 minutes’ drive away. Not that you have to set your sights that far for fresh-air activities: it’s a short stroll from the pods to the site’s trout fishing lake, where tackle hire and tuition are available for those who need to learn the ropes. If alfresco feasting’s more your thing, get set for a cookout – each pod comes with a firepit that’s set up with a grill and cooking pot, and there’s space to dine out on your personal deck. Granted, it’s not always open-air dining weather in Northumberland, so it’s a fine thing that the smart wooden pods also have a kitchenette (with fridge, hob and oven). No dashing to the loo in the dark either, as each has an ensuite bathroom with shower and toilet.

Local attractions

History buffs will find plenty to pique their interest in the past around these parts. The surviving parts of Hadrian’s Wall (a once-mighty 80 miles from coast to coast) are about 15 minutes’ drive away, and there are more Roman remnants to see at Housesteads Roman Fort and the Roman Army Museum, both of which are about 20 minutes away. If it’s outdoorsy antics that draw you to the area, it’s a cinch to head out for walks or bike rides direct from the site, or you could seek out scenic spots such as Allen Banks and Staward Gorge, 10 minutes’ drive away, or to the Hareshaw Linn waterfall, 40 minutes away. And if you’d rather see it all from above, there’s a Go Ape! adventure park 25 minutes away in Matfen. Setting your sights further afield for a city fix, it’s about a 40-minute drive to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and around 50 to Durham or Carlisle.
