  • Family-friendly cabins a mile from Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland
  • Roman Army Museum 10 minutes’ drive and Kielder Water 45 minutes
  • Licensed shop, camping kitchen and petting farm on a dark skies site
Looking to explore Hadrian’s Wall? You’ve come to the right place at Herding Hill Farm Caravan and Camping Site, less than a mile from the northern outpost of the Roman Empire, and five minutes’ drive from the Northumberland market town of Haltwhistle and its pubs and shops. And what’s more, when conditions are right, this dark skies site offers spectacular sunsets, fabulous stargazing and even the occasional chance to see the Northern Lights. It’s easy to keep active kids occupied: there’s a playground, a petting farm (children are welcome to help with the twice-daily feeding) and a ball field behind the cabins. Facilities for dogs include an on-site walk and enclosed exercise field, as well as a dedicated shower to clean any muddy paws. Adults have plenty to be pleased about too: there’s a licensed shop selling local produce, breakfast goodies and meat packs, and you can hire the barbecue hut for celebrations or family suppers. The well-equipped camping kitchen has all the vital bits and pieces as well as vending machines, or alternatively, you can decamp to the local pub (15 minutes’ walk), which serves great food and local beers. It’s easy to keep on top of chores in the laundry room, and other facilities include an accessible shower block with underfloor heating. Useful extras like firepits, barbecues, bedding and stargazing kits can be hired too. As this is a quiet site, the owners do ask for silence after 10.30pm.

Local attractions

You can walk to Hadrian’s Wall in 15 minutes, or otherwise take the AD122 Hadrian’s Wall bus service, which stops right outside and runs to all the major Roman sites. The forts of Birdoswald, Vindolanda and Housesteads are within 15 minutes’ drive, while the Roman Army Museum is 10 minutes away and The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre (five minutes) acts as both an interpretation centre and a hub for walkers. If the kids are a bit resistant to Roman heritage, try them on the tractor rides and soft-play centre at Walby Farm Park (half an hour), or set them up with dinghy sailing, duck feeding and wildlife-themed sculpture trails at Talkin Tarn Country Park (20 minutes). For wild hiking adventures over hill and dale, head for Northumberland National Park (35 minutes) or the rugged North Pennines National Landscape (20 minutes). For something more family-friendly, most kids will be happy with pottering sections of the Lakeside Way around Kielder Water (45 minutes) while watching out for the birds of prey that make Kielder Forest their home.
